have been having a look an the GT-3 seems to be the better unit overall, however the UV-5R does have a AA battery pack available that allows you to use AA batteries instead of the standard ones.
Also on the batteries, apparently all the oens labelled 2800mah are bollox and they are mislabelled from factory and are in fact the standard 1800mah

After doing a bunch of reading, I've ordered two Baofeng UV-82s. Built around the UV-5R chasis, they are reportedly bigger, stronger, have better RX/TX capacity and are easier to program. Bought them off ebay for $150 including two handsets, two speaker mics and a programming cable. Will post pics when they arrive.

I got a UV5R a month ago now , not a bad radio for $40 bucks . I mainly got it for emergency services monitoring And UHF CB Use , plenty of different accessories you can get also. And has a handy built in flashlight and FM Radio ! Dont forget the best program to use for programming is called "chirp" available free from www.miklor.com , he also does good reviews in regards to similar makes and models .

I'm interested in want you think about them when they arrive nighthawk. Yep I'll post a review for sure. I was torn between the UV-5R and the GT-3 MkII, and both review very well, then I was reading one review site and someone said that he'd just bought the UV-5R when he heard about the UV-82 and wished he'd got that instead. So I started pursuing that and it seems like a bit of an upgrade on the other two models, and the slightly bigger handset appeals. I'll be using Chirp (I hope) and I found a site where you can download a data file that basically programs all the UHF CB channels for you.
