Brisbane storm damage: www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/army-mobilised-to-help-cleanup-after-brisbanes-freak-storm/story-fnkt21jb-1227137608689Okay guys - sound off! I want to know if all the SEQLDers are okay after that storm thrashed us. We are fine, hubby had to escape work early so he didn't get stuck when the trains went down (again), but apart from about 20mins of really heavy rain and high winds, we were mostly unaffected. Friends in different parts of Brisbane had car & house windows smashed, trees down, roofs damaged etc. I read (in the link above) that one poor couple lost their roof, and had to shelter under their airconditioner in the hall because they couldn't get into the bathroom. Even though we didn't lose power, it made me feel better knowing we'd still be able to make light and cook dinner if the storm had hit us as badly as elsewhere. We've got storm shutters but this morning I realised that the safest room in the house in a huge storm like that is our storage room downstairs (which also has the cat's kitty litter so doesn't smell too great). This room is cramped, filled with junk, and could potentially flood from the water running off the street if it rained hard enough. I'm going to make sure there's a small kit down there with some first aid stuff, light, food, blankets etc and maybe a pack of cards or some other way to entertain us. I might not have time (or it might not be safe) to grab my gear from upstairs. I'm also going to organise the room a bit better so there's more floor space, and stack all the 'junk' down there in waterproof containers (at the moment some of it is in cardboard boxes). Any other ideas?

I was at work when this one hit in Milton. I saw it coming when I was out getting smoko. My work got trashed, Windows smashed everywhere Cyclone fences bent roller doors blown to pieces, A couple of mates and I were down on a platform watching the hail and rain, it was very impressive and powerful, we heard a bang and turned around, then we looked up we started loosing the roof then we were getting showered with hail inside, I was very exciting. we were shut down for about 4 hours after just seeing if it was safe for people to go back to work. The area I work in went back to work after 4 hours but the other part did not kick back off, the drive home was interesting at 22:30, trees down all over the place no lights, you don't realise how dark it can be in the city sometimes.
We did not get hi t that bad at home just rain no hail.

I'm down in brissy atm, and unfortunately I drove this time, so both my car and the missus were parked in the street. Now I'm up for 2 insurance excess payments for hail damage and 1 smashed windscreen.
Didn't impact my prepping, except I'm majorly out of pocket now trying to save up enough to cover the excess of $1500.
Hey step, if you think that your storage room is at risk of flooding, you should think about getting some extra drainage around the house, maybe put a "mote" of those drain troughs with the mesh top leading to an underground runoff pipe to the gutter, won't stop a big flood, but may buy you time to get some sandbags made up to cover doorways, and isn't THAT expensive to do in a weekend

It seems that there was/is 70,000 people without power, some of them must be members here. Anyone with a success story about how their off-grid backup system?
