This video is not to be confused with the newest one made in 2008 - also by the BBC.
It was made for TV and I have been watching it via Youtube in snatches of 50mins etc. I only discovered at the end that you can watch it consecutively. Being 3 seasons, it was confusing so there is the link for the episodes below.
Its set in the 70s and it struck me how innocent the whole series was, but this appealed to me because they talked about farming techniques etc. that the writers were more familiar with compared with the similar one made in 2008. I enjoyed looking at the clothes, decor, cars, homes etc. which was familiar because we were married in the 70s.
A worldwide pandemic wipes out 90% of the world population and it centres around changing circumstances as the characters realise they are on their own literally. No two members of the same family survived. This in itself was frightening. Finding shelter was no problem as there were castles and houses empty everywhere. As the band of people started to grow, so did problems. They realised for the human race to continue, they needed to populate. At the very beginning class was a problem with those 'entitled' still expecting to be served, wanting the status quo to remain. Crime was settled swiftly to protect a community.
There is too much to tell here, but one thing did stick in my mind. There was never time to do 'extra' outside of feeding the community in the beginning with limited numbers. The 'leader' had thought that it might be a good idea to keep some of the houses near the main home in good condition, even though no-one occupied them. This never happened. A fire destroyed the castle they were in and in the dead of winter they had no shelter to flee to. They had to travel for days to shelter with another community. Staying as a decimated community was not an option. Those with medical skills were fought over and kidnapped for 'other communities'. Small pox came back quickly as well as rabbis from dogs being quarantined at airports etc. that escaped and joined with domestic dogs. I enjoyed it and very believable.
