Found this tutorial on setting up the Baofeng UV-5R radios as a repeater. Would be hadny for boosting local communications

Very interesting. Gee they are tiny radios.

I can't watch long videos, but it seems it's a simplex (one way) system, is that correct?

I can't watch long videos, but it seems it's a simplex (one way) system, is that correct? The way it's setup, rather then use a duplexer, you can offset the RX and TX on each radio as the duplexer. Program the frequencies in, then set the TX radio to VOX mode, then plug an audio cable in the speaker socket of the RX radio and into the mic port of the TX radio, effectively making a basic repeater

The very fact that there's a "Tx radio" and an "Rx radio" and things like "set the TX radio to VOX mode" implies simplex to me. But if you cross over the audio cables and set different freqs on each radio and set both radios to VOX I think it would work in duplex mode.

#greynomad, you are right - there's a receive radio, and a transmit radio. I have a similar system, but I use a Baofeng uv-5r for receive, and a QYT K9 series for transmit (20 watts out) The whole rig is hiding on a hill, with a 250w solar panel I got for a six pack of Kilkenny Red. I haven't checked it for a while actually - might have to go for a hike.
Basically, your small handhelds transmit on one frequency - the uplink to the receive on the hill. Then, they all receive on the second frequency - that's the 20w pumped out from the big rig.
People can receive the large TX over good distances then. You may not hear their responses as their small TX's have to reach the RX of the small baofeng on the hill. But if you plan your message not expecting a reply (SITREP, or simple sign in that all is ok, etc), it works well.
