I am older rand for me it looks like crap! As a RN I have seen many idiots with infections in puncture sites and partial removal of infected ear lobes and cartilage in ears. To each their own, but it does not float my boat! Just my opinion. I suppose those idiots then just lack personal hygiene or the knowledge to not go to a dodgy piercer or do it themselves. Not all of us are like this and I am studying to become an RN and nothing has been said once about my piercing. (Reply to doomsdayprepper^) I also don't see why some people get so offended by it and use the term drilling holes into their body yet tattoos are the norm. Digging small holes and filling with ink isn't any better, and someone's personal appearance shouldn't be judged. Not liking piercings and tattoos is fine but there is no need to use name calling.

Just as many dodgy and infected tattoos out there. All comes down to getting what you pay for and having the knowledge to do appropriate aftercare.
Body mods will always be contentious and we all have our preferences. I disagree with the blanket assertion that we shouldn't judge people by their appearance though. Tattoos, piercings, clothes and body language are all expressions of self. This is a separate issue to something like race or sex in that, particularly in our free western culture, these are all things people are free to choose for themselves.
When you wear certain clothes or have a piercing/tattoo you're communicating the image you have of yourself weather you like it or not. To ignore these signals you put off would be sticking your head in the sand.
If someone looks at your tattoos, your clothing or the way you hold yourself and judges you by that, consider it a blessing. You have just saved yourself and them a whole lot of time.

"Drilling hole" is derogatory term these days? I like most piercings and I say drilling very often. Piercing is possible safer than ink and much easier to reverse. As for people judging you, who cares? Be it fair or unfair, we get judged on our skin color, believes (or the lack of it), cars we drive, area we live in, how much we earn, music we like, food we eat anyway, so what what's one more? Do what you like and be happy.

Glinting body metal would make a good target to aim at in a shtf situation! Just get a big silver button added to your forehead!

I'm going further that's the thinly veiled threat. Cut it out.

I like piercings- and agree body mods are a personal thing. However do disagree with comments re complications. It's not dodgy operators and clients with poor hygiene. Its generally bad luck or a small slip in hygiene and bang - a good going infection. Certain ones are more prone to infections than others - the really bad infections I have seen have all been bridge of nose or male genitals. I have collected big collection of cases over 20 years and i can say from that it is random to a degree, big complications tend to occur early, and i just haven't generally seen a correlation with dodgy operators - like I say seems random.

Sorry was not intended as such it was not a threat it was statement of facts same as the comment about nipple ring being ripped out in a westling contest! Anything that draws attention to you in survival situation is not wise or safe. Same as smoking and talking loudly as did the americans while in vietnam and cause a lot of them to get shot by VC! Covert is better. Oh yes and please do not quote me as saying "drilling" as I did not thanks! That was in someone else comments! I used the term puncture site! Anything that exposes you to the chance of hepB/infections or any other disease should be very carefully considered is my main point.

Personally I'll stay as God made me, the only 'body modifications' I'll have when dead are scars from general wear and tear. I find them more interesting than any tattoo or piercing, but like most of you said "to each their own" because I know people can really love that stuff.
Although as a sidenote I would say that piercings in particular will only be to your detriment when engaging in close quarter combat (like that nipple story someone mentioned, also for example nobody can spar in my boxing gym if they have piercings for obvious reasons), so when SHTF I'd suggest you get rid of them (perhaps the metal can be used for something else) unless you feel you have taken whatever precautions necessary to avoid such a situation.
Yet again I wouldn't suggest having long hair either for the same reason (lots of sentry removal tactics could be modified to use on people with long hair instead of a helmet).
In summary the less things your opponent has to grab the better, so wear pants!!!

This is literally what comes to mind every time I see someone with a nose ring.

This is literally what comes to mind every time I see someone with a nose ring. Anyone knows why they do that to bulls/cows anyway? How did that tradition start? I refuse to believe that farmers are trying to be fashionable with livestock, there must be some sort of practical reason (pulling them if they are refusing to move?).

there is a saying
The only difference between a person with tattoos and person without tattoos is the person with tattoos doesn't care that you don't have any
I personally don't have any problems with people having piercings where ever they want in their body and its pretty common now so I kind of don't even notices it anymore hell I even know a delightful straight laced Christian school teacher that has NSFW parts of her anatomy pierced more than once
My wife has multiple piercings some traditional some NSFW plus a few tattoos like half her back a half sleave and backs of her legs and her feet now in my wife's case her tattoos cover pigmentation scars from a skin condition she suffered from and people used to stare at her like a freak so now they have artwork to stare at and judge now instead
Interesting enough her back tattoo is of crossed pistols ( Taurus PT99's )vines and roses and well as we um found out in some places of the world guns and flowers signifies revenge killing a local kind of explained my wife's tattoo told a story of her murdering a whole family women children everyone no one spared so that explained why the young couple next to ask packed up and moved lol
I myself have no tattoos or piercings nr do I ever intend to simply because I grew up around people that had tattoos and I know the meaning of most of them and since I haven't done anything to earn the meaning of most of them I wont get them my father use to employ 3 types of people ex prisoners , bikies and ex-servicemen they all had tats and they all had stories and meaning behind every drop of ink and I respect that
