The Channels always great for all food and it really shows how long things last. Canned peanut butter, seems to last forever. I've often toiled over suitable fat storage, I've seen plain canola oil lasting 10 years in the dark, though peanut butter is a fantastic storage item. I'll have to hunt around and see if I can find some commercial pressure canned versions [lid pops when you open] which ought to last similarly if kept in the dark. Eg. That ought to have been pressure canned for instance. It'll pop when you open if it is.

Wouldn't jars of coconut oil have been pressure sealed?

If you can't find peanut butter that's already pressure canned, just do it yourself.
Note to self: buy a bloody pressure canner

Tomatoe's probably! My problem with coconut oil is the price, otherwise it's a long lasting fat. Though of course horses for courses.

I actually don't use coconut oil much now but I believe that it keeps better than a lot of other oils, so I buy it when it is on special - just a jar every now and then. It is expensive full price. I do use coconut oil for a few specific things I though. I use it for creams/salves and also make a spread which tastes a bit like butter - tastes better than marg and less scary ingredients - and it uses coconut oil (perhaps useful for butter eaters if butter is not available).

Seen quit a few WW2 can rations being eaten. So canning can last a very long time.
Peanut butter oils can go rancid very quickly - although a high energy food and excellent for animal baiting - not good for long term storage.

I've seen natural peanut butter go rancid, but never the US style (sold at Woolworths). I've eaten 5-year old and it was just fine. It doesn't separate after being opened for 12-18 months.

I am guessing here as there's not a lot of literature specifying any of these long term food storage items, though the anecdotal seems to be that a lack of oxygen indeed stops rancification of peanut butter. I would imagine oils would also fall into this. No container is perfectly sealed 100% sealed glass even leaks gases very slowly, plastics quicker and of course seals normally used for peanut butter aren't very air tight, since they're plastic. Until a study is made on these MREs by someone who can test levels of pathogens and so on which I really wish was being done instead, it's calculated speculation. I plan for 10 year storage anyhow, so fairly moot, and that's it anyhow and the amount of food that seems to last during that period is quite high. Even if half the food I stored was bad, I've got enough to not be concerned

Seen a group of relic diggers in Russia open a WW2 Russian fish or tuna ration tin and eat the whole lot on bread , they seem to enjoy it ... at the time

NICE! Ha ha... Always waiting for that! Love the very amateur yet warm feel, you're just hanging out with the guy feel, as he dares to eat old food. He's great.
