What back up cooking options do you have for if, short term (like a couple of weeks), your oven/stove couldn't be used, you had no power, and you couldn't cook outside? Most of the cooking alternatives need to be used outdoors due to fumes. What indoor alternatives are there?

I have used those small gas cookers with the butane cartridges inside, even with the windows closed.
I guess the other alternative is eat everything cold.

All my back ups should be used outside.
Backpacking small tin gas burner, butane canister stove, lpg 2 ring burner and weber lpg bbq.
All portable to varying degrees.
All I be happy to use inside with windows open if needed but outside is safest.
If I couldn't go outside or open windows, my instant coffee will be eaten not drank

I use small camping gas cooker inside a tent - no issue with using them indoors. Many people have industrial gas stoves in their houses, how is a small camping gas stove or gas BBQ going to be a problem.
Most indoor wood heaters also have cooking options - a nearby friend of mine has a wood heater that has cooking attachments, indoor wood cooking was the go prior to electricity - just need a chimney. I need to do some work to enclose my back door patio and put up a small chimney - that will done with end of year bonuses etc.. if things have not failed yet.

I tried asking this same question a while ago - best answer not mentioned here was chemical heaters similar the ones you sometimes get with MREs. Not sustainable long term but good if you're shut up with limited airflow I think paranoia said something about how if you're in your own home and you can modify it, you can set up a stove or cooker with an external air intake and outlet - so you can set a fire in a wood stove without letting outdoor air into the house, I suspect whether you can open the door briefly to put wood in depends on whether you're shut in due to chem/biological agents, extreme cold, pollution or something else and how bad it is. Otherwise yeah, chemical heat packs, hand warmers, battery powered electric hotplates that barely keep anything warm or cold food.

Um I just use a fondue set with the stand and a little meth burner, have a couple side by side and you can heat up stuff. I have boiled water on it and then put that in a thermos for later use. Works well but just have to store up Methylated spirits.

That's a good idea. I'm sure I have a fondue set stashed away somewhere.
Chafing fuel could also be good. Anyone try this? I wonder how slow it would be.

I have three types of cooking in my house - electric, gas, and wood stove, so I always have some way of heating up food or water.

Wood burner has a cook top on it. It flu's out well even with the door open and coals will cook stuff hard.
If you have a vaccum above your stove you could start a small fire in an old pot (i have a small camp firestove id use) on top of the stove you normally use and just run the fan to get the smoke out.
I also have electric fryer to cook.
Microwave.
Pressure cooker can cook well that goes on the fire as well.
I also have small gas stove for camping, and whilst they do not advise running gas without vents, it can be done, or you can open a window a little near where you cook.
you can boil water with elec or on the fire and blanche food or cook it in another packet or vessel in the water.
Youve also got steam cooking as well.

Got enough power to do daily microwave. Backup is alcohol burners, next to a nice big open window. Blue flame ought to have low levels of CO which is the main issue, same goes with gas. We use natural gas stoves every day in the kitchen, if it's blue I'm not overly concerned, though still cautious [open window]. I'm also planning to 'heavily diet' but not starve in bad situation to fit in. Lastly I have months of food that requires no cooking in case I need to stay low key, the smell of cooked food as well as smoke can give away your position and situation.

A good few good thermos will means you can do all your cooking for the day at one time. You need a really good thermos to keep the food or water hot for the day.
