This is my current project - I have selected the spot, and measured it out - now to start. The reason for using pallets is that they are free, are in abundance, and are made fairly strong. Here are a few links I found that may be of interest. This is the design I am using, though I will make it bigger than this plan; Pallets are about 1.6m sq, so I will go 4-6 long, and about 4 wide - depends if I can find an old caravan, then if so, will enclose the caravan within the cabin, and may not make it as big, but will see.ruralroutediaries.weebly.com/pallet-shed-building.htmlOther plans below that may also be of interest.www.sliptalk.com/pallet-shed/summerville-novascotia.com/PalletWoodShed/

I'm with FB. If you can source all the wood for cheap or free like through gumtree and the local classifieds etc then I would do a traditional style walls and use the pallets for the floor and deck and bust up other ones to use the wood for shelving, support etc. But your project and we are all watching with great interest with your project. Just make sure you get the hardwood pallets, as they will be treated as well and last longer then those nasty pine pallets that break if you walk on them lol

Interesting build idea. I love the idea of upcycling what would be normally discarded timber into something useful.
I would suggest throw a few strap cross braces onto it. They cost peanuts, and may very well help prevent it from blowing over sideways if a storm comes through.

That last link with the pitched roof really needs collar ties, too (horizontal ties between rafters about 1/3 of the way down from the apex). Funnily enough, the chicken coop that was subsequently posted has collar ties. The chicken coop would probably move less than the shed!

Thanks for the tips - yeah, the bloke helping me is a builder, so it will be a lot stronger and sturdier - plus we are in a reall protected area from winds, but yes, will definitely make more braces/supports for strength.

I started a pallet cabin once ... converted it to a nice bonfire after a few frustrating weekends. With a builder working with you I expect you'll fare better!
I have also have an ill considered plan to make a ye-olde style roundhouse out of car tyres filled with clay packing. It's a big job requiring lots of digging and hoisting of earth ... but the end result will be bullet proof, have excellent thermal mass and excellent durability. Would clad the exterior in used corrugated iron and the interior with thin ply.

I know I keep going on about it, but if termites are in your area they should be considered. We have termites all through the Perth metro area (and much of the country) and the little buggers cause a LOT of damage.

I heard a statistic that in Adelaide, 1/3 of houses will experience a termite infestation in their lifetime. Probably wouldn't apply to newer houses with permanent termite treatments and steel framing, but it's a definite risk for timber framed/old houses. Since the build is elevated on besser blocks, you would hope to see mudding if an infestation occurs. Unless you're unlucky enough for them to come up right under the build. In which case you're pretty screwed!

I've seriously considered building horse shelters out of tyres, as I had a roundyard built out of them previously...and a friend looked into building her stable complex out of tyres but in a traditional rectangle shape with square boxes/stalls. Only problem I'd have here is sourcing the clay to go in them....we are on proper sand plain country 😂 if I do build shelters out of them I'll post pics.

I built a wall out of pallets, turned out pretty well I think The left side is just cladding on a container, the right and back is the wall. One interesting side effect I didn't think of is that the cavities inside the pallets make really good storage for long items such as PVC pipe

A bloke I know is an avid fencer, and uses pallets to hang all of his swords instead of purchasing a rack. Just thinking, if your pallets are flush against your container, your stored items can also act as insulation. Maybe set up a vertical garden system?

Don't forget, I suppose we've all seen the pallet herb gardens...

Yeah, at the very least they provide shade to that wall.

Um ... it also looks scary. Have you ever seen a really big pallet bonfire? I hope you are planning to just drive away from all this infrastructure in the event of a bush fire?

This area never gets real bush fires, and we have cleared so much land we don't worry about grass fires. But yes, our plan is to fire up the truck and GOOD should things get too hot. Also, I sprayed them with diesel so that should help

Um, please excuse my ignorance, but wouldn't diesel help them burn? It will help a lot, note the A job worth doing ... etc. Diesel for the termites and some weather protection? Crikey ... how's the aroma on a warm day? I sprayed out the timber on my chook house with diesel to control mites ... still smells like a refinery 5 months later.
