A sign of the times. In South Australia as long as CFS map books continue to be printed there remains a handy sized, waterproof source of topographic information. I assume other states rural fire services also produce these books?

It appears all about the $$$... Or profit margin going below a floor of some kind.
Here in this part of the north, the best GPS and all available is worth squat in a canyon bottom. And not as rugged of places you might imagine. Home printed maps are likely to last 5 minutes in real world use. I don't know what is out there for home lamination products, but is likely a poor substitute for a quality produced map.
Yes.. There will likely be safety issues. It seems people are bad enough about getting there selves in a jam when they decide to go out and commune with "nature" And who foots the bill for there rescue ?? Hint.. Most times the tax payer. I have helped in search and rescue incidents. It isn't easy, fun, or necessary with some common sense... Wait.. What was that key word again ?? (common sense)

maybe people are too reliant on gps now, and can't read a map ( reminds me of a Jeff Foxworthy skit, when he's driving to a place, and his wife is reading the map for him " now go down the red road, then turn left at the blue road, then right on the green road till you come to three black squares!!!!!)

If you can't use a map, compass, pace beads and a watch for effective land navigation then you can't navigate! GPS should be your back up, not your primary Nav Aid!

Most people would do well enough with accurate map reading. If you need pace beads and a watch you are doing more than 99% of people will ever need to use. But knowing how to use these extra skills will be a definite bonus. I'm told there are many, many mistakes in GPS... Telling people to turn the wrong way on one way roads, and turning into lakes or off cliffs. For instance, I have seen things on Google maps that were shown on the wrong side of the road. Things that were not listed at all and so on. Google Map, GPS, any other computer system is as good as the old computer saying..... "GIGO" Which stands for... garbage in, garbage out...
