CBC tonight saying the fires are spreading to new areas. People fleeing to the ocean to escape. And likely cool off. Caught part of an interview on CBC with a forestry expert in Australia saying the problem is not the forest so much as the thick under growth that fuels the fire enough to destroy the forest. Forestry experts here saying much the same things about fires in the province. We also had many sections of highway asphalt burn to black gravel.
Saw the burned root thing with the forest fires by the Mother-in-laws place. Fire would burn the undergrowth bush, grass and leave the grass roots as powdered ash. Then when they did get rain, there was the flooding, erosion, landslides and all. This for two years now.
All take care.

I was going to start another thread on the current bushfire situation, but thought I'd just piggyback on this one (if you don't mind bce1).
I have fire to north and south of my coast retreat, and fire to east of my highland retreat. Neither in immediate danger at the moment. Had I gone to either retreat over the Christmas/New Year break I'd be directly impacted. I have friends and in law relatives who have lost property or are trapped in the firezone.
Mrs and I have spent a lot of time the last 2 days thinking about our fire prep.
Currently searching for a supplier of 100% pure wool blankets, because we want to buy one for each family member. Baulking at the $199 price most retailers are charging. Ex army blankets on ebay all seem to be repros with a wool/synthetic blend.
Anyone here been trained by RFS or similar who can point me in the direction of proper fire ppe, including blankets, masks, eye protection, clothing?

Have you tried the QM at a large ADF base - they are always throwing stuff out - may have a pile there gathering dust? I'll ask a few Q's I know.
Base Services? Not 100% sure of the name-it'll come to me - they run all the accommodation/meals etc on ADF bases - they'd have warehouses full of them! I'll pm you the name when it comes to me!

We have those in our work vehicles. PS: They are only about half the thickness of the 1960's vintage grey blankets I have in my private car.

You can often find them in op shops Or you could felt wool jumpers from op shops and join them (sew them patchwork style) - would be beautiful on a bed in winter but still not so precious that you wouldn’t want to use them in a fire. (I use to collect old wool jumpers found at op shops to felt and recycle into cloth nappy covers/baby pants.)

Interesting that food water fuel power is now a major topic in the fire news as people have none of these in the post fire stage and roads are still closed This is where I won big browny points with wife and neighbours👍😀😀😀for being a prepper The only one I’ve got to improve on is fuel storage- necessary post fire but a major issue during the fire

Good point about fuel. Just remember burning liquids flow down slope.

Er ... if my memory of other posts is correct ... don't you smoke Cubans, drink single malt, have a vast real estate portfolio and shoot a .338? $100 each for fire blankets is pocket change by your standard!

Don't forget about my fondness for pretty blondes. I have all those things you claim I have, and I still figure the more I can save on wool blankets the more I can spend on those finer things that only a gentleman appreciates.

Checked the forecast and the 10 day before I went out today. It has been high and low levels of overcast the last 3 days. Lower level moving across fast from the south, with light snow all 3 days. I used about a third tank of fuel in the tractor to move the snow we have as far back as possible..
Starting tomorrow, snow coming up the whole province from the south, with the band getting wider as it comes north. By the time it gets to us it will be province wide and into Alaska and Alberta.. Here it will dump the most in accumulations they say.
North of us on the Yukon border they are having avalanches already. Unfortunately, 2 dead and one injured in that.
This all to start tomorrow late afternoon. Hopefully we can make a quick, short town trip and be home before it get bad. Bank, post office, big and little library, short grocery list, chicken feed, books for the passenger rail station, Royal Legion, and 2 senior center book shelves.
We all have our weather issues to deal with.. >>>>>>>>>>
This afternoon on CBC a forest fire expert from Alberta pretty much saying the Australia fires are text book worst case.. The accumulation of under growth in the forests is the biggest contributor to the fact when fire does go through it burns long and hot enough to damage timber. Along with the issue of burning off grasses and there roots, then erosion after. Global warming has nothing to do with fire. Fire produces smoke that shades and cools the ground, and particulate that encourages rain. >>>>>>>> Hope all had a good New year.. Our splurge was a DVD movie, home popped popcorn and tea...

Not just gentlemen appreciate those things. Politicians and bankers love them to bits as well. You'll know you've really arrived in the gentleman's circle when you own a cruising yacht and some internationally renowned race horses. An 'investment grade' wine cellar with at least a half million worth of contents is also looked upon favorably. As is a minimum of $1 million worth of car.
