Don't want to put a damper on the offal party but a little care should be taken with some offal particular the liver, which is where nasty chemicals(from drenching etc.) will collect over time. Only a problem for farmed animals, particularly sheep and goats which are wormed more often. Just something to keep in mind.

Would appreciate advice/recommendations on the above, have looked at Goal Zero which seem OK but would welcome any other suggestions. Main purpose is to recharge batteries for headlamps and other torches.
Thanks

Re seed keeping, put some rice in your seed storage container as this should take care of any moisture. There is divided opinion about storing in refrigerator, but cool and dark storage area is generally recommended. I use an old frig (but not turned on). Our resident guru, Veghead, may be able to provide a more definitive answer.

Veghead, Many thanks for the info, I am looking at preparing some new beds which I plan to use in spring. I just started saving my own seed for quite a few different plants - all non hybrid(have always saved pumpkin seeds -these have been in family for 3 generations).Comfrey tea is something I will try. Accessing good manure is not easy but I have just invested in a couple of pigs- not sure if their manure is ok to use. Is Seasol a suitable choice as a seaweed application?

VH Have enjoyed your posts on gardening. Would appreciate your suggestions for preparing a vegetable bed. Is there one type of animal manure better than others? Have access to chicken litter. Is liquid manure (chook poo) a suitable fertilizer. Do you mulch veg beds?. Any other tips would be welcomed. Have just planted out cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower. onions, garlic.
Thanks

I think some people even on this forum give out to much information about themselves. The problem is you do not know who is accessing your info and for what reasons. More than happy to share general info or sites where others may obtain info or deals but for last few months have been keeping a very low profile on this and other forums. If things do go bad, people will come looking for those who were to open about their prepping. I understand the forum is about sharing and supporting one another but best keep your personal stuff real tight, even getting to know other preppers in your region. Any meetings etc should be on neutral ground as you try to suss each other out. At some point you will decide if you can trust the other person(s) or not. Until then no personal details about where you are located etc.

Am having a container delivered next week and will need to move it about 20 metres into a shed. Thought I could use logs under container and then pull container with tractor into position. Any suggestions on this idea or alternatives would be appreciated.
Thanks Bill

Hi folks
Just ordered a box(250) of 1 gallon (USA) mylar bags and 400 x 300cc O2 absorbers from LDS online store. Bags are 7ml thickness. This was the only size they had. I actually prefer this size over the larger bags. Total cost was $142 US, with free postage. I have just received email goods are on the way and so far no change in pricing (I was a little concerned about the free postage).
Regards Bill

Next project is a wood fired bread oven - no good having a lot of flour if you can't make some bread. Trying to track down some plans, plenty of pizza oven plans not many for bread ovens.

I store a lot of food stuff in old chest freezers, must have good seals and still need to kept as cool as possible. Luckily I have a big shed with good air flow and high roof. The use of the crawl space is a good idea, we are expecting 38-40 degrees this weekend so I will be measuring the crawl space temperature and see how it compares to the freezer temp.

Don't know much about hand crank radios but just double check the free postage as it may only apply to USA (if radio is being sent from there).

Not sure but would probably be ok heat wise, just need to be able get the mylar bag edges into the sealer unit. You could try using a steam iron to seal the bag but don't use steam setting. Start with a low heat setting and if not sealing adjust upwards to about medium heat; google for more options.
The double sealing process would depend on how long you want to store the food for, mylar bagged food will last longer. Recommend you still use o2 absorbers if using mylar bags and store sealed food in bug/rodent proof air tight container.
Hope this helps

Do you know where the bags are manufactured? Some of these coming out of China are of poor quality. I did get some direct from US manufacturer but postage was high.

Hi Nighthawk Do you still have copies of the book Disaster Preparedness Handbook - Families. If so would like a copy, just let me know cost/postage.
Thanks

unfortunately the only thing their probably good for is as a bag to put the other ones in. Have the same problem, pigs not chooks. The bags breakdown very quickly in sunlight.

Hi Thereth
Would be most interested to here how this unit performs. Had a quick look at their site and they also seem to have a good range of off grid packages. I already have a 3kw system but it is on grid, I am thinking of getting an off grid system that would allow me to run say freezer and fridge should the grid go down. My knowledge in this area is basic so am happy to take any advice as to the best way to go.
Thanks
