Ive been looking into short term lighting options during a power outage and while candles and lanterns have a place there is an inherent fire risk with these, so for short term blackouts Ive been looking at products like the Eton Blackout Buddy as an option. Has anyone had any experience with these emergency lights that will automatically switch on during a power outage? I purchased something similar from Bunnings but these cheap "Click" brand products only lasted a couple of months before failing in one way or another. Just wondering if anyone has used these Eton ones, or some other quality emergency lighting options?

I used Peerblock for a while and it is great at blocking out traffic that you dont want coming and going from your computer, but it is not a VPN, so your tracks are still visible to your ISP. If they don't respect your privacy they could hand over your browsing history to the powers that be. A VPN will protect this to some extent by shielding your usage from your ISP as all your browsing goes down an encrypted tunnel. www.privateinternetaccess.com/ is getting good reviews from Aussie users, and even though it is hosted in the US which some would say are the biggest offenders of privacy invasion, it apparently is harder for the US to spy on their own people. No VPN is completley private but PIA is one of the best from what I have seen. PM me if you want any other info.

I picked up a couple of the RH771's, just waiting for them to rock up in the post.
Nice setup you have got there with the telescopic for the scanner function and not bad for $18!

Hi Rob, I have changed it to have the page titles displayed. It had originally been set that way to improve the search engine rankings in Google which was really important when the site was first forming.

Doc, I can't stop singing the 'Green Green Grass of Home'. He said: 'That sounds like Tom Jones syndrome'. 'Is it common?'I asked. 'It's not unusual' he replied.

A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says: ''Ugh, that's the ugliest baby I've ever seen!'' The woman walks to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her: ''The driver just insulted me!'' The man says: ''You go up there and tell him off. Go on, I'll hold your monkey for you.''

A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named 'Amal.' The other goes to a family in Spain, they name him Juan'. Years later; Juan sends a picture of himself to his mum. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wished she also had a picture of Amal. Her husband responds, "But they are twins. If you've seen Juan, you've seen Amal."

Randy the Rooster
A farmer buys a rooster to service his 200 hens. When he gets the rooster into the barnyard, he tells him, "Randy, I want you to pace yourself now. You've got a lot of chickens to service here, and you cost me a lot of money. Have fun, but take your time."
The farmer points him toward the henhouse and the rooster takes off like a shot.
WHAM! Randy nails every hen in the henhouse, three or four times. Randy runs out and sees a flock of geese down by the lake. WHAM! He nails all the geese. Randy runs to the pigpen, the cow pasture -- soon, he's been on every animal on the farm.
The farmer is distraught, worried that his expensive rooster won't even last the day.
Sure enough, the farmer wakes up the next morning to find Randy laid out flat in the middle of the yard, buzzards circling overhead.
The sad farmer shakes his head and says, "Oh, Randy, I told you to pace yourself."
Randy opens one eye, winks, and nods towards the sky, "Shhh, they're getting closer."

Financially I see things getting worse with either a gradual or rapid collapse at some point, with the associated social upheaval. My goal is to get me and my family away from it all before that happens.

Has anyone ever slept on the foam mats as seen in the picture? I have a double air mattress, but just as a backup if it gets a puncture wondering if these are any sort of comfort to sleep on. As the others have said, they are not the most comfy thing to sleep on but they will insulate your sleeping bag from the ground. The 3/4 self inflating mats are great or as Jay said a heap of leaf litter will do the job. While our nice soft beds are great now, if it got really bad we would need to get used to sleeping on the cold hard floor pretty quickly.

Great thread! Id be grabbing a heap of scrub land in the middle of nowhere, build a self sufficient concrete slab house on it (solar, wind turbine etc), drop a big well down, fruit trees, veggie garden, few cows, chooks, rabbits etc. There would be a few bikes, quads and 4WD's in the garage including spares, maybe one of these for $450k (http://www.paramountgroup.biz/en/marauder.html). Some hidden underground storage with a stash of food, tools, materials, a couple of cap guns library, extra bunks for you lot . Like myrrph said Id put some into a diverse range of investments to keep a steady stream of income coming in and then spend my time getting my skills up, keeping the property going, spending time with the family etc. There would be a few smaller backups around the place too, wouldn't want all my eggs in one basket.

Once again mate you have come up with the goods! Im all for portable as it give more options if I need to get out in a hurry. I would probably go with a roof mounted unit similar to Rob that could be taken down and angled to the sun when camping, that I could then transfer to the camper when I get around to that. The above 160W unit looks pretty good - that would just mean I need to grab a battery? The AGM's seem to get a better wrap than Gel - what are your thoughts on that? Seems to depend on the intended use again?

Mate what would something like this cost to setup? Battery included?
Im after something that can run a battery charger, keep the phone and laptop charged and perhaps run a radio.
