I'd go with vaulted steel beams like this old mate.
Steel is cheap, easy to work with, and I imagine it would give you better load carrying than wooden telephone poles and such. The curve will transfer the weight into the walls and is reminiscent of the Blitz era Anderson Shelters.
Personally, I live in an area where flooding could be an issue so I'm going to build a Boer war era pepper pot block house with an upgraded, cyclone proof, roof structure. They are cheap, easy, and will give you plenty of protection against most threats.

"don't even start me on the left-wing quasi-intellectuals I've encountered who have mocked me for paying a cafe bill with cash" Hah, you need to start hanging about with some proper left wing intellectuals. stallman.org/rms-lifestyle.htmlThere is a strong opsec / anti surveillance / anti personal commoditisation movement in the left that goes back to the 50's and 60's and beyond. Cash is king. Visa can't sell my personal information if they don't have it. I can't fall into a debt cycle if I don't borrow, and when the internet goes off for whatever reason I can still get home or buy food.

I have down loaded 6 post apocalyptic fiction novels to read. Should keep me busy for a while. You're game. We have a rule in our house about anyone watching reruns of "Air Crash Investigators" 72hr before anyone is due to take a flight. I imagine reading apocalyptic fiction during a natural disaster may fall into that same category.

I also thought it was odd that people weren't discussing it. This is the exact sort of thing I am stocked up for, not the one in a million edge cases. This press release from the state government is pretty motivational to make sure you are squared away in case you ever need to be evacuated. mypolice.qld.gov.au/blog/2017/03/26/evacuation-residents-burdekin-coastal-communities/* Don't bring too much stuff. * Have a plan for your pets * Don't count on getting fed. * Have something to do to keep yourselves occupied. I heard that they are concerned about storm surge flooding low-lying coastal areas and that's why they are pushing so hard for people to leave the area.

I have often considered putting aside some time to grab my bag from the car and try the 3hr hike from the office to home. If something were to go south that's most likely where I'd be.
Has anyone tried anything like that?

I'm not sure if I like being spied upon by the same mob that asserted weapons of mass destruction existed so as to take out the legal head of a foreign country. Awwww, c'mon, all they did was create an uncontrollable power vacuum that has plunged the entire region into a swirling vortex of death and misery for millions of people. That's not too bad an outcome by American foreign policy standards. ISIS is just the next Pol Pot or South American Junta vying for the body count high score.

My first three things I chuck in a travel bag are sunscreen, bug spray, and a good water bottle.

Good on them. I think all democracies should have some level of compulsory civic duty. Makes people not take voting for granted.

I love that chan. My favourite bit is when Karl goes full I.T guy and lapses into asperges like nerd rage about some nuance of a niche subject.
