Ok, for those more knowledgeable on storing things like this, what's my best option with milk? For powdered milk for example, am I best off buying tins and leaving them sealed (concerned about the amount of air in them) or buying the bags (same issue) and vac packing them with o2 absorbers? What about condensed milk, both sweetened and unsweetened?

I have heard skim powdered lasts longer than regular powdered, that's the extent of it for me though.

Do you know what the shelf life is of the tins of powered milk? I could wrong, but the "air" in the tins may be nitrogen to already help in extending shelf life. If it needs to be stored longer, vacuum sealing to remove all air and storing in a cool, dry place might be the go. Although this would be a guess based on storage of other items.

Ok looked at 5 main options regarding milk, evaporated milk, sweetened condensed, full cream in a tin, full cream in a bag and skim in a bag. They ALL had an expiration between June and August of next year. Every single one! Lol

I have some powdered milk I plan on putting into mylar bags on the weekend. The mylar bags I use also have a ziplock, so once opened, I can reseal for temp storage. So I tend to put 1-2 cups per bag, which isn't too much that it will go off too quickly once open. preparingyourfamily.com/long-term-storage-dried-milk/

Interesting that they all have around 12 months shelf life, I would have thought an already dry and sealed product like that would have been longer than that. Thanks for the info

I have always worked by the assumption that "best before" dates are merely a suggestion, and even "use by" dates have some leeway, provided the product is stored carefully (cool, dry, steady all year round temp & humidity). Mylaring and keeping cool will allow you to keep full-cream powered milk 5years or longer, skim milk powder will last even longer! Just using vacuum bags is not enough with long term storage of any food as the bags will leak eventually! And using O2 absorbers in a vacuum sealed bag is a waste of time, as the plastic bags will allow air in over time. Mylar is not cheap, but neither is your food stores!!! After saying that: use what ever you have to store for the future. But when you can afford Mylar, re bag As for best before dates, most food is fine for up to 5 years after! As for use by dates, which not many items have...don't keep!
