I hope I'm not alone in have some things in my pantry that are well past their expiry date. As I'm trying to get more serious about food storage (it's such a big job!), I'm trying to learn more about shelf lives, extending shelf lives, and managing my pantry better to avoid things going bad. And yep, a clean up of the stuff that really is past it is happening soon! I've been using eatbydate.com as a resource for getting my head around how long food can last, but I think even it is erring on the safe side by a large margin. For example, tonight I was using up some breadmaker mix that was coming up to expiry, and out of interest, I checked the expiry date on the dry yeast can which I keep in the freezer. I can tell you, I was a little surprised to see it had "expired" in 2008 I've been using it all this time (every few months), and it is still going just fine. Even eatbydate.com says it should only last 4-6 months past the printed date, and this has been opened for a long time too. Of course we still need to be safe and not give ourselves food poisoning, but am I alone in having some WAY out of date items still in use? What food types have you tested (on purpose or by accident!) that were well past their official used by date? It could be interesting to get first hand experiences on these things, because it could be handy to know that things like yeast can last 6 or so years past their official expiry, right?

I find that with a lot of use/best by dates, it is for if it is stored on the shelf. Items such as yeast and meat can last months and years if kept frozen, especially in a deep freezer, where you can pull Christmas ham that you meant to cook 3yrs ago and cook it up this year

Hi Lina, I as just on that site.... www.eatbydate.com It's really informative. I just cooked some damper (first time) using self raising flour that was over a year expired. It tasted really good with a slither of butter on it I will let you know if i get food poisoning...gulp.
