From what I can see, a Carrington scale event is completely impossible to predict (for or against), and write-ups like this are frustratingly vague about the extent to which our local power networks are (?still?) exposed to risk, or not.
I mean, sure, they can't say definitely what will happen, but something like "key infrastructure could be expected to begin operating again from 24-48 hours after the conclusion of a solar storm" would at least tell us where they're up to with disaster recovery planning.

Sorry to repeat myself from other threads, but CME is only one threat to our power grid. HEMP is another. But most likely in my opinion is cyberterrorism. I choose to prepare for the worst case scenario, knowing that this will give me the best chances in the case of any of the three.

Just watched the ABC Lateline show from last night concerning cyber terrorism, which mentioned the FBI has been called in to investigate 11 attacks on San Francisco internet lines over the past year. These were all low-tech attacks - basically a dude cutting the cables, but managed to cut off access to homes, businesses, police databases, ATMs etc for varying amounts of time. While losing access for a day doesn't sound like much, just imagine what could happen if a small determined group cut numerous cables at once? How long would people be able to deal with losing access to ATMs (or god forbid their home / phone internet) before chaos ensued?
