I had thought that buying LPG cylinders is cheaper than using the disposable butane cylinders [they can be refilled btw, see youtube]. The short answer is LPG bottles are cheaper to fill and butane is cheaper to store.
Explanation. The disposable butane bottles are 220g and butane is 49.6Mj/kg. This works out to be $5.67/kg and 11c/Megajoule [gas energy] Your 8.5kg swap and go bottle to buy filled is $56.75 [Bunnings] and propane is 50mj/kg. This is $6.68/kg and 13c/Mj - refilling is 5c/mj.
Is it worth paying a little extra for the refillable bottles? I guess as always it depends on your situation, if you refilled them once then you'd be in front if you bought the LPG bottles. Perhaps the smaller cylinders make more sense in a BOV.

When camping we only use the butane cans and cookers. Have so now for years.
The cans are quite economical and last a few meals. Cheap to buy when on special and small enough to be easily stored, especially in the 12pk cartons i buy.
Regardless which you choose, shtf, there all going to eventually run out.

Last I filled up 9kgs of LPG was only $21 with my bottles. I haven't done the maths but that's bloody cheap. Swap and go only give you 8.5kgs, that's one reason I never use it (not that I've ever weighed my supposed 9kg refill )

I use both, LPG for home and some camping/bbq meets, and butane for my little portable stove. I have a good supply of each.
"One is none and two is one". (As well as a good supply of Charcoal briquettes.) ....OK and Kero, metho, turps etc....LOL
PS: Oh Gray they sell our LPG and natural gas to china for less than 15 cents...Soooooooo we are Sooooooooooo ripped off.

We use both. Our cooktop at home is LPG with 2 cyclinders connected but use 1 at a time. $110 per cyclinder and the one we are using at the moment has been on for nearly 18 months. If we had to boil water on the stove rather they the kettle it would be used a fair amount quicker, guessing we could get 6 to 12 months per cyclinder if we had no electricity. We also have an LPG cyclinder on the BBQ and 2x 9kg bottle spare.
Camping we use the butane cookers and cans, usually pick these up for $1 to $1.50 per can and they seem to last a decent amount of time
