I just found out that someone has tried using my credit card fraudulently. While no charges were put through - so no loss there - I naturally cancelled the card with my bank. The new card will arrive in 3-5 working days.
Not that I depend on credit, but my savings account is linked to this card - so no eftpos is available. Thankfully I do have a few hundred in cash in my wallet (plus more in the safe), which will take care of any shopping or most other expenses during this time.

I had a similar thing recently with a call from the commbank asking if was currently visiting the UK as my card had multiple, quick online attempts originating from the UK. My card was instantly locked by them until contact was made with myself. Funds were then transferred to my other account and a new card was ordered for the one in question.
I was also lucky as it was a visa debit with at the time about $4K in the account.

My old man had a similar case years ago - with someone trying to buy several thousand dollars worth of t-shirts in the USA. His bank did the same - locked the card and called him immediately.
I also once had a customer attempt a purchase (for a few grand) at work; the card payment was declined, and within 2 minutes our bank was on the phone asking questions including physical descriptions of the couple, what they tried buying, did we get their car rego, etc. Unfortunately that was before security cameras covered everything, so I couldn't help with the rego.

If the shtf, wonder how many people will try to make large food/water purchases, only to have the card denied. It sure makes sense to have some cash around for a situation like that. And, yeah, my wife always checks every card purchase, and will question anything out of the ordinary with the bank. So far we have been lucky (taps head) "touch wood"
