Can I please get a show of hands who would be interested in the YAESU FT-4500 radio? As I've got a rough price and to determine shipping costs I'll need a number so I can set a final price. I'll be pricing these pretty much exactly what they cost me to buy in plus shipping from me to you.

I'm about 90% bud for the unit, I would have to see a final price to be sure, though from what you wrote about doing it at your cost, that seems very likely.

I know you need numbers for a price but are you able to give a rough idea or range of possible prices? I think it is prob out of my range right now.

Depending on the currency rates of the day, I have so far been quoted USD$650/unit plus shipping

Joey, you might want to explain what it can and can't do. From my understanding it's a very capable unit.

Strictly ham Australia have a special for $990 AUD with Australian warranty ,
Usd conversion is approx 900 plus whatever shipping is , From what joey quoted approx , i would spend the little extra for piece of mind for warranty purposes .
I personally don't need anymore radios .

I bought my Yaesu VX-6R handheld from strictlyham and was very happy with the turnaround.
Still cant stress enough, do the licence before buying gear... You'll quickly learn what features you want/need in a radio and wont pay for features you'll never use.

I'm just waiting to hear back from the nearest assessor for my foundation license hopefully next week when they have their monthly club meeting. As the nearest assessor (200km away) no longer does it, so he has forwarded my details onto the next nearest assessor (250km away) lol

The baofeng BF888s have been mentioned a few times, and again just now in the solar radio thread, so I've just looked them up on eBay. All the headings for the listings include both "UHF" and often also "ham radio". I thought these were different things, or perhaps I need to do some rereading. Do you need a licence to use these?

UHF, the 80 channels, is our CB [Citizen Band] channels that anyone can use and assuming you're not talking on emergency channels [which would be like prank calling 000] for no reason and a few other simple things it's as easy as buying the units and talking on the correct channels. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UHF_CB. These channels are all around the 477Mhz [UHF] mark. Care has to be taken to make sure the radios are set up for Australian radio channels [stick with local and you should be right] or you'll have to program the channels yourself [what I opted to do to save a few dollars]. You're not allowed to transmit on a device that's on non-CB channels without a license. The BF 888s I'm familiar with as I own and used them. They're also cheap and not top quality or anything, though will give you basic communication with a few features. The big one for me is their simplicity, it's the lack of features, turning the knob for the channels for instance and the cost. HAM, as I have learned from this post is not called that here [though in effect much the same], has an absolutely huge range of frequencies available with differences depending on the level of license you have. The more I look here the more blow away at it's potential for communication you can talk to people on the other side of the world, though the costs are much more generally. These same frequencies also are available in hand held units.

What advantage does the yaesu VX-6R have over one of the slightly cheaper yaesus - like the FT-270R?
