Been to 7 or 8 Finke's. Started going when we lived up there and still make the 3200km round trip every few years. The camping is unusual. Heaps of fireworks at the 40km camping area. Considering the state of the campers setting them off its amazing there aren't more firework related injuries.
You either need to love loud music, bring ear plugs or (as we do) set up camp a good distance away from the track so you can retreat to some relative quiet later in the evenings.
Basically it's Mardi Gras for off-road enthusiasts.
Then there's the actual racing ... which puts all other motor sport categories well and truly in the shade.

Can you camp anywhere you like along the track? There doesn't seem to be any reason not to.

Last time we went up (about 3 years ago) you could still pretty much camp wherever you like after about 20km from start/finish. I think Undoolya Station was actually controlling access for the first 20km of track. Having said that, the race committee has been saying for the last 10 years that access may be dramatically reduced in future. Some of the wilder camps do leave a lot of mess and camp stupidly close to the race track.

And for those who like to make good their escape on 2 wheels ... Note the crazy speed at which this jump takes place. Gotta be standing there in person to really appreciate the risk involved! Botch the landing and it's going to hurt ... a lot.

The real tragedy of Covid 19 for our family was missing out on getting to the Finke race this year.
We haven't been for a few years and having booked some nice hotels and such both en-route and up in Alice, was really looking forward to a couple of weeks away.
Will be trying again next year I guess!
