Thanks for the info myrrph!
I've been looking at updating the pack of food I carry in my work bag -- I usually have biscuits, lollies and a few other bits and pieces, but really need to look at what provides the best calorie load against size, weight etc as the bag is starting to get too heavy.

When you do update the food set you carry I'd love to hear what you put in it - all ideas are good
Our kids have been playing "survivaling" by locking themselves out in the back yard with a pack of food for the afternoon - a mini peanut butter, cup a soup sachet, instant noodles, a packaged teabag and a muesli bar (each). I've been giving them a small carrot and a piece of fruit too and telling them to pretend they found them in the garden hee hee... they have been finding things to do pretty easily, but don't have a clue how to keep their "campsite" tidy ughh!! We're, uh, working on it.

haha sure thing. But my rations will be based on what is available in Singapore.
Some items like chinese jerky may not have a similar nutrition component.
Plus I am looking purely from caloric intake rather than nutrition

Somewhere, a while ago I found recipes for homemade life raft type rations. Two chunks of this about the size of a bar of soap was to equal roughly a 24 hour MRE in food value. Not necessarily a totally balanced nutrition, but close enough in nutrition, and calories to sustain.
Will have to work on this some come winter.

I hope its not the same as hard tack

All things tempered by two facts, the far north, and I'm an old guy....
I see a "home assembled" meal a little differently.. A kit to keep in a desk, locker, car to get home from work, grid down at home, sun up to sun down in the bush on the tractor are all different things. Have different requirements, and flex abilities in there own area.. There can be a lot of overlap, but one size doesn't always fit all well.
The thing I miss most out of MREs is the little bottle of Tabasco...
