Interesting article. Unusually deep and accurate for MSM TV news.

Hmmm - interesting.
If they take over air space, I'm betting on a shooting war in weeks, if not days. Once they can take an inch ( already let them get away with the islands ), then they will try to take more and more.

I sometimes wonder that if the various China seas were renamed to something else then would China back down on "ownership" or would they rear up and start taking pot shots in similar to how they are ignoring the tribunal decision that they have zero rights to the waters?

China will never back down - shame of losing face, and with what it tells everyone there, better to try to fool everyone than admit to the masses you are wrong.

The ridiculous thing is that its not actually called the "South China Sea" in China, just the "South Sea". Dunno when it was changed, or if the Chinese ever called it the "South China Sea" in the first place! edit: a quick look at wikipedia (obviously not always correct) says the "South China Sea" name came from European explorers, and that has always just been known as the "South Sea / Southern Sea" in China.

Thats a coincidence. I was just telling family 2 days ago that I figure we are already in a cold war with China.

I suspect a hot war (over Taiwan) could be a prospect in the aftermath of the US elections.

Well that's a blast from the past. Graham Richardson, my big boss. I remember him engaging me in a private conversation once, asking me about a local policy in his portfolio, and as we were speaking I saw, over his shoulder, my boss, my boss's boss, and his whole entourage notice that the Minister had slipped away unnoticed, and was in private discussion with a lowly little grub, yours truly. The horror in my boss's eyes was inspiring.

A Chinese state-owned company has a 90 year lease on Darwin's seaport. If things start getting nasty I imagine it will be nationalised pretty quickly (no foreign owners allowed in China's infrastructure, despite their WTO requirements).

Indonesia and the Phillipines have already started renaming their adjoining seas, removing the word "China".

In Victoria they still own a sizable chunk of our utilities, most notably on the electricity side.
