malewithatail: The thing we feared the most in combat was the lack of comms, not knowing what was happening. The battlefield weapon the Germans feared the most was the BC336 walki talki, even with a only a 2 mile range, fury could be called down on them by anyone anytime

malewithatail: Knowledge, now is the time to learn, get hold of some old (1950's and 60's) ARRL handbooks and learn how radio works, be able to build your own simple receivers from junked bits. Check the communications board for more info.

frostbite: Isn't ham radio for very long distance communication?

malewithatail: Ham radio can be as simple as communicating with your friend in the next town, or 1/2 way across the world. You can use the amateur satellites, bounce signals off the moon or Venus and communicate that way. The sky's literally the limit.

The only 4wd truck I have driven is the army Unimogs. The off-road performance was incredible. I remember thinking "I really shouldn't drive in there because I'm gunna need a tow to get out" but the bloody thing just climbed up the other side of the creek bed no problems!
Not sure if road-based trucks with 4wd running gear are the same but if you have one you could move a lot of gear. The height is a bit scary though, probably very easy to tip.

Somewhere I saw a post by a guy who took a John Deere 4x4 Gator with the 3 cyl diesel engine and made a BOV of sorts out of it..
He fitted a box to the cargo area. Put 15" or so utility trailer wheels with road tires on it.. I have no idea his location, but I have to believe it is somewhere that.... winter for instance... is not a significant issue in his ability to use it..
Unimog.... One of the best things ever invented.. They can even be had with farm implements..
The farther north you go, the more things that want to eat your horse and you. Grandpa Gilbert Keep your stick on the ice. Red Green
what are those vehicles called and more importantly where can i get one?
Geiser Brothers Trophy Truck.
6L chev or ford powered. Rated upto 900hp. They sound earth shattering up close when they are on the the fly. The first time I saw one in action at the Finke desert race I couldn't get over the speed these things do over ridiculously rough ground.
A new one cost about $400k. But used can be had for much less.
Two of the best spec units in Australia are owned by a fruit grower at Renmark and a potato grower near Mount Gambier. I reckon the owners find tax effective ways of using them to 'promote business' LMAO.
