I'm sure they would work well.. They are whinny anal about moving gas bottles here... Have to be vertical, tied down, bla, bla.. It isn't that hard to handle, but some people could wreck an anvil with a marshmallow..
We only have a couple 40lb bottles. Nice not to have to change bottles as often, but they are a pain to haul, get filled, go out of date rather than using 20 lb exchange bottles..
We do have a fair supply of 20 lb bottles just for the reasons of easier transport, and exchange when out of date..
If we ever needed more gas, or bulk gas. Depending on need I would buy a 500 or 1000 gallon tank and have it delivery filled.. Not that expensive a system, depending on need..

A common system here in Aus is to have two 100 lb cylinders hooked up together, when one empties switch to the other one and go get the empty one refilled. But as you say, although they are manageable it is a pain. The gas companies will bring a full one out on a truck and swap it over but this isn't practical (or cheap) if you are hundreds of miles away.

+++ Yes... Distance and amount of fuel delivered is part of the pro -- con sheet of deciding to use a stationary and what size stationary tank.. We are about 40 km out, so distance would not be a big issue if, when we ever did this type system.. You get on a fill list with a supplier and they do all there customers in the area on the route..

I just use a milk crate. Works well and is free. And backs up to take down knife wielding terrorists.
