And this is why 3d printers will become proscribed items in Oz pretty soon.
To own one you'll need a permit and a government issued data logger that records everything you do with your printer and sends that info back to a registry. There will be a mandatory training course for owners to 'learn' the legislation around the control of their use.
Police will be able to access your printer any time they please without a warrant to check the status of the datalogger to make sure it isn't being gamed or whatever.

We are very primitive, unsophisticated thinkers in Oz when it comes to politicians and policing and total banning is the easiest tool for the jackboots to embrace!

They are the ultimate firearms precursor. Print a firearm, bipod, high cap mag, silencer and off you go and do your merry little thing.

Springs, firing pin, barrel etc cannot be 3d printed. It's a misleading article title.

The way they make the barrel though is pretty interesting.

Springs, firing pin, barrel etc cannot be 3d printed. It's a misleading article title. Viet Minh made DIY firearms without 3d printers using stuff readily available in vietnam in the 1950's (ie Nowhere near what you can get in your local hardware store in Oz in this day and age). They were pretty much 1 shot disposable affairs designed to kill a stray soldier so guerrillas could acquire a proper combat weapon.

If the politicians' kids have them, it'll be like negative gearing. Irresistible, and "legislation to make it unworkable isn't the answer" (used to be 75% of our federal pollies owned investment properties, not sure if that's still the case)

Yep.
Why ban something you can make a revenue stream out of? That's why we still have firearms ownership (and smoking is still legal). Think of all the tax dollars generated by sales of guns, ammo, accessories, mandatory training, safes, range memberships, guided hunts, fuel and supplies for DIY hunting.
It must add up to a fair bit.

Yep Don't ban it just make it so there is a great deal of expensive administration, licensing and registration fees that it will pay gate most people and only those that really want them will bother going through the hoops and hurdles to get them so this way they end up prohibited by proxy rather than an actual 'ban '. They have used this method far more then people realize
