Good news for us then!!
If CCP and Xi are dopey enough to expend heavy military effort on a patch of land that provides little strategic gain ... happy days. It might take an edge off them if we fight a war against them over there first. I hope you're correct.
Effective empire builders usually go for resources to fuel their expanding economy and support big, powerful militaries.

One thing I would like to get recorded before the event - this coming Sunday is what the Taiwanese call Double 10 day. It is their national day (as opposed the china’s national day being on 1st 0ct0ber).
China may do something a bit more interesting compared to their usual fly-by or incursion this coming Sunday. The Chinese seem to like to coincide new events with dates of previous events.
BTW - for those that may be curious about my interest in Taiwan, I finished my BA Asian Studies (Chinese) in Taipei and then I spent another 3 years living in Taipei and then living in Hsinchu Chu (on the west coast of Taiwan). So Taiwan is close to my heart. I spent a good amount of time there and do consider Taipei like my second home.

China unleashes an EMP nuke to disable communications, Taiwan responds by blowing up the 3 gorges dam, China loses 300 million people, could be the shortest war in history.

I went to school with a heap of Taiwanese. It wan’t until years later that i concluded they were the early get out of dodge brigade. They were pretty cool kids. Their desire to integrate should make most newcomers blush. one bloke named “John” had a fetish for XXXX, aged 12, he would not stop talking about it. Yes i’m referring to the beer.

At the moment the US has 4 aircraft carrier groups off the Philippines on some international "exercise" so maybe they are in place ready for the chicoms to try something with Taiwan soon since they seem to have escalated their airspace incursions of late

China unleashes an EMP nuke to disable communications Do you really think that an EMP over Taiwan is going to be the opening move on Taiwan ? Apart from the international outcry from collateral damage, it would be an own goal for Chinese assets in the region and an own goal for the loss of the billions of dollars of semiconductor fabrication capability (among other things) in Taiwan that China would want to acquire as economic & capability spoils of war.

If China were to attack or bomb Taiwan, then they will be very selective in what they choose to target - and they have to make certain they are very very accurate. The reason being is that Taiwan holds a vast amount of the treasures and artefacts of Chinese history - and the mainlanders will not want to destroy these artefacts. Putting this into perspective, when the kmt (under Chiang kei shek) escaped the mainland in 1947/48, they took with them most of the Chinese treasures, historical documents, items and artefacts from the many museums they could access - and even items from within the forbidden city. The vast majority of these items are now stored in the national palace museum in Taipei - www.npm.gov.twthis place is amazing as it has about 700,000 items covering all of Chinese history - going back thousands and thousands of years. But being smart about their defences, the Taiwanese have also put some of these items in various other buildings around the island - namely the kmt headquarters, CkS memorial hall etc. so the mainland Chinese will never do a heavy or saturated bombing campaign in Taiwan because if they do, they will be destroying their history - and they are too proud and too nationalistic to do that. this collection spread around Taipei is considered to be the ultimate historical collection of Chinese artefacts - with some items being older than the Egyptian pyramids. No Chinese president will order bombing that may destroy these items. As a side note - the good thing about the kmt taking all of these items after the civil war, is that most of them would probably have been destroyed during the cultural revolution (1970s).

If they take Taiwan the world bends over to China as they will have nearly all control over the worlds production of semiconductors. No chips, no ability to wage modern war. The end. Have we woken up yet? No.
If i were Taiwan i would have rigged the whole semiconductor show with enough boom boom to make Dresden look like cracker night.

Hence the reason for an EMP, to try and disable the US fleet (Probably not going to happen), and save the infrastructure. Rebuilding bombed out buildings is far more difficult than replacing electronics. And most of it probably came from China in the first place. Besides, it would be a good show of strength to say, "we can do this to you as well, so dont interfere". A directed EMP weapon can be very specific in its effects and shouldn't affect the mainland or Australia. (That would upset us though perhaps not as most Australians are now used to doing as they are told, like good little sheeples). An EMP weapon would also disrupt communications for some time, so confuse the 'enemy'. We live in perhaps the most interesting time in history.

No Chinese president will order bombing that may destroy these items. Or they won't admit to it. Or just say the enemy westerners looted them.

Um ... you kind of nixed your own argument there Captain. "no president will destroy national treasures" "National treausures would have been destroyed during the (presidential ordered?) cultural revolution" You think Xi is not like Mao ?? (Or whoever was running the place in 1970) Or ... are there now enough rich and influential chinese with high national pride who are capable of standing in the way of Xi? Anyway ... saturation bombing is dead like the dinosaurs. Its just too expensive both during the process and after it. Surely they'll concentrate on using precision munitions to hit power stations, military CCC's, tv and radio broadcast infrastructure etc? A few hours ahead of thousands of small 'fishing' vessels disgorging hundreds of thousands of Chinese infantry everywhere around the coastline? (1st phase) followed by a well directed very large invasion force at a precise location (Inchon style) ??

(Or whoever was running the place in 1970) Or ... are there now enough rich and influential chinese with high national pride who are capable of standing in the way of Xi? Uhmm...no. While Mao initially “ordered” the cultural revolution, it was the local cadres and party members that took the reasoning of it overboard and did their own things in order to “please” the hierarchy - in turn, it was the local elements and young cadres that went too far and ruined the lives of many. It was these local cadres that ruined everything- with the hidden blessing of the Gang of Four (which included Mao’s wife but not Mao). It is also thought that the Gang of Four actually ordered many of the atrocities during the cultural revolution- and not Mao. the cultural revolution was initially meant to be a “cleansing” of the party elements as Mao had become paranoid about a plot to over turn him and this cultural revolution was meant to find out who were the elements behind this plot. But the Gang of Four took it further and encouraged local party members to “abandon all western influences” and to “clean up the state”. It can be argued that Mao lost control during the cultural revolution as it went further then what he planned or hoped to do. The main culprits behind this were the Gang of Four. in essence, the people or groups that would’ve ruined many of these artefacts during the cultural revolution were the local young cadres trying to boost their “credentials” with the hierarchy when basically nearly trashing the place. The Gang of Four were primarily responsible for it - and they were all charged with treason - after mao’s death. so to refute your dismissal of my original argument, no, Mao was not the leader ordering the destruction of the society. The Gang of Four came in and “influenced” the local members to instigate turmoil in the communities which in turn devastated many social elements. It was pure chance and luck that the KMT, under Chiang kei shek, took many of China’s treasures and historical artefacts to Taiwan 30 years earlier as without that, many of these items would’ve been destroyed by the local cadres. Chiang Kei Shek’s wife was one of the Soong sisters. 3 sisters who had a very big impact on China and the sino-political movements of the 20th century. One of these sisters loved China, another loved money and the other loved power. The story of the Soong sisters is one that should be studied by any student of 20th century history - due to the power and money involved. The youngest of these sisters, mai-ling was an incredibly beautiful woman and was also the official translator for when Chiang kei shek was communicating and dealing with the US government. That is a whole complex story which I may share one day.

And so it is that the chickens are coming home to roost as a consequence our political and industry leaders failing to recognise the stupidity of putting all our eggs in one Chinese basket.
