They look good eh? My missus wants to put a deck on top of one of ours, I'm not overly keen but that one above looks ok. And I see one has a vertical container, that was in my earlier plans with an atrium, and a spiral staircase to a room at the top for relaxing at the end of the day with a beer But I decided it was too whimsical and expensive just for that. Maybe I should revisit the idea. Here are a couple of 3D renders of the design

How come container homes are so popular? These ones look pretty damn cool though I wonder has there ever been a container home on Grand Designs? Love that show.

When i initially took an interest in them, they werent so grande. They were cheap. and with a bit of DIY they could be pretty awesome. There more looking like a current "fad" at the moment.

With the exception of the current series I think I've seen all the Grand Designs shows, most of them 2-3 times I don't recall ever seeing a container house on them. The software is Developer3D ( Developer3D.com but seems to redirect to www.visualsupercomputing.com) I haven't used it for some time, I'm a big fan of Sketchup ( www.sketchup.com) these days. Developer is probably easier to use but Sketchup is pretty easy as well and there is a huge online library of components. For example, you want a Landcruiser, they have several in their library. I got one of then and modified it for my camper design I just grabbed a cab chassis and started building my camper on that. Very nice program and free as well. I know they have containers in the library.

Some flash looking homes there. Didn't realise they were so popular or could be so elaborate

Man the barricades I love it. I'd like something similar but arrange the containers in a square/rectangle so you have a secure enclave inside, much like Roman and north African houses.

on another forum...
a shipping container castle used as storage units wile the containers were coated in bullet resistant material, and the food source was aquaphonics, where all non renters were slaves but accepted and your preps weren't yours, expecting 1000 renters and had all kinds of magic weapons from a 50cal rifle (and unlimited ammo) to everyone had a security job, cameras around everywhere and his biggest "fear" was poorly researched emp event
I bring this up cause after tearing the idea apart (it has a patient Lol) the idea reminds me of that doomsday preppers reference (I have never seen that show)

does it actually work out cheaper to do container homes? once you take insulation into account?

If you do it yourself, maybe. But, like everything, quality and labour make it dearer. It's really a get-what-you-pay-for proposition.

I'm not sure, I guess one way to know is to cost a 2.5 x 6 (or 12) metre box built to the same standards but out of normal materials. Then compare that to a container with a roof. To be honest I've not been looking at the cost much, I DIY everything and I just like the idea of having the basic structure in place with an hours work, then getting out the oxy and welder I also like to have a "house" that is very secure and while you can do that with stick built as well nobody does because it's a lot of work, whereas with a container that's the default mode.

shipping containers as a building block is quite cheep, you can build some nice houses around the 100k mark, but they are unsightly... can be a pain to work with, but easy to expand and they are used all around the world as low cost workers accommodation, and the military use them too for the same purpose
it will also be easier to expand the size of your home (need a extra bedroom no problem, no need for engineers reports about the structure, its rated at 100 mph + wind speeds, the list goes on)
but unlike brick or weatherboard it can look quite nasty and messy if you don't do any painting or improvements
