The Chinese did kick butt in the Korean War and they were up against veterans with years of combat experience. No easy task. But it was a land war for them so much easier. Overwater sucks. The Chinese at that time were in the same position as the US when it came to experience. Both fought the Japanese (the CCP had a loose, temporary alliance with the KMT), then the CCP won a civil war against the KMT. This was all less than a decade beforehand. This is no longer the case. The CCP hasn't been in anything other than localised skirmishes such as against India for a very long time.

As in: the numbers as given you consider low? ... or ... they are higher than you first thought Total numbers for the number of years. I don't know much about the air war part of the Vietnam War. But to use the Phantoms, 582 over however many years the war went is only 1 every (whichever time period). In the hottest part of the Battle of Britain both sides together lost 1000 planes in a month. There was a danger of running out of planes. That wasn't ever going to happen in Vietnam. If it was, the yanks could have scaled back. Not that it wasn't ugly. It was a difficult war to fight with so many things to consider. The f111's were like the SR 71's. Even if the mission failed ... you looked f#cking awesome in the process. Agree. There is something about swing-wings with their wings back. They look deadlier!

I'm not up on modern air power by any means.. Last experience I had was with bone heads flying off there required hours in the T 38 playing mess with the civilian out in a Cessna 150 with a student.. You would hit bumps in the air that would almost rattle your teeth out to see 2 red flames arching away..
Again, like with the RPG, any adversary who faces a seemingly unending number of A 10 Wart hogs and turbo prop Tucano (?) or the like, that swarm like mosquitoes on a hot muggy summer night will not do well..

Does anyone here know how credible our air defence systems are? Do we have anything beyond minor battlefield defence capacity? No. Only the RBS-70 system ATM. Getting a much better system scheduled for 2022-2023, the NASAMS. Uses the AIM120 missile which is combat proven and it looks like Aus can buy the better versions of this missile.

Be interesting to see what Aus ends up buying, let's hope they do it well or I might just start prepping for a different kind of shtf.
