Hootchie cord. Head down to aussie disposals or similar. You should pay around 8 bucks for a 50m length on its own plastic spool. If you have options for diameter just get the thin stuff. I dunno what the ratings are but the thin stuff (2-3mm-ish diameter) will serve well in this and most other tasks and bends more easily for little jobs.

Overseas. Current country list looks something like... Indonesia, Turkey, multiple countries in Europe, probably somewhere in South America and a couple states in the USA.

Long story short, next year I'm gonna be doing a a bit of travelling. Sort of all over, backpacker style.. Climates and terrain will vary from city to desert, and from bloody hot to bloody cold.
What precautions would you take prior to going and what precautions would you take along the way?
What would you take with you? Limitation is one backpack. I'm thinking around the 60L mark.
What wouldn't you take with you?

I've got Baofeng UV-5R 's that I picked up for $40 a piece. They're pretty good, especially at that price.

Looking for a high quality item and you want the best, something that other people have tested in numerous conditions and used, some might say abused, but have stood up to the pounding and are still kicking. This thread is to recommend a product that you've bought/received, thoroughly used and would recommend to your close friends or family as good quality.
I'll start with an item that's been mentioned in a few threads of late, multitools. My favourite multitool is the Leatherman Wave. I have the previous model, with 154CM blades, not the current model 420HC blades. I've used it in a range of environments, on a huge variety of tasks. It's fullsize and what I consider to be full capability but not too heavy that you'd consider leaving it behind because of weight. Before shipping, it can be found for around US$90. I bought mine for $66 dollars several years ago. I should have gotten 5. Though I haven't broken a single thing on it and it's got a lifetime warranty, I just like it so much I'd be happy owning 5 haha.
So what other items are people looking for recommendations on? I'm kinda a gear whore...

I thought Bics were more than that... I don't smoke, and usually buy 4-5 at a time. Haven't bought a lighter in ages, I probably would have gotten a Bic if they're only that much instead of the matches.

Are you referring to IS? I don't believe even IS is stupid enough to try and take Russian territory. While the West is crippled by fear of public opinion, Putin would have no problem in carpet bombing their whole little caliphate back to the stone age, that's if they didn't make the whole place one big radioactive glass bowl.

I read the title as how to secure your remote location. My first thought of course was a bank of m18a1's...

Okay, these are 'the wrong' trash bags. They've got the bottom all joined together, not like a standard rectangular bag. They're as thin as I was expecting for the price... shoulda left the petroleum jelly and got better bags

Chemists sell it in 50g plastic containers. Buy more than one and they'll think you're dodgy

I have LM wave, surge, fuse, skeletool and s2 juice. So I'm biased, I love leatherman. However I've used Gerbers and Swisstools... sharing is caring.
However, on a chinese-cheapo brand one, in one week, I twisted the plier heads, snapped the tip of the knife blade, bent a screwdriver (admittedly I was using it as a prying tool) and got a sore hand from using it. That sumbich was uncomfortable to use.

Equals... Now I've shopped heavily from the Coles homebrand range, in terms of things like flavour and quality it's not going to be as good. But for $20 there has to be compromises. All these fitted in a standard shopping bag, I got two for a bit of added strength. These are good for general carrying tasks and could come in handy for a dozen different things. Generalised purposes for each item are as follows: -Water bottles. Water is good for you to drink. Also needed to cook the rice if it gets to that. -Aluminum pie dishes. I was going to get a 10m roll of foil, but these looked interesting. I'm going to make another post detailing uses for all this stuff, I'll experiment the effectiveness of these in that post. But long story short, I'm planning to make a pot to boil water and cook rice, a spoon to eat the peanut butter and eat/stir rice, and if it's strong enough I might even try make some fish hooks with it. -Box cutter: Any and all cutting tasks -Pads: Wound dressing, tinder, basic water filter. -Matches: Set things on fire. -Garbage bags: raincoat, shelter, instant backpack, pack with leaves to make a sleeping mat. -Petroleum Jelly: Assorted first aid, anti-chaffing/sunburn rubbing/lips drying/etc, add to pads for fire making. -Food: Jelly beans for instant energy, peanut butter for effort-free mini-meal, rice for if you've got time to set down somewhere and cook up. -Tape: attach pads to body for first aid, joint garbage bags together for making a shelter, folding onto itself and making basic cordage to tie things The spoon is one folded dish, the pot is two dishes. The spoon has a wide end for the rice, the narrow stiffer end is for scooping peanut butter. I tested it on the peanut butter and it works great. But I just ate dinner and so no point cooking up some rice in the pot. Cheated and instead of making a fire just tested the pot on the gas stove. Sturdy enough to hold the water no worries, can't really tell it's boiling from the light reflection but there's a nice boil going on. It holds just a tad under 500ml, so boiling 400ml is practical. Tired of carrying 3L of water in your hands, don't have a pack? Hmm what do I have to make a carrying method with. I've got electrical tape, let's try that. Took 3 strips about 80cm long, fold it in half length ways on itself, then plaited the three strips together into some simple cordage. I tried to think of a name for making rope out of tape.... but the first thing that came to mind was, well.. inappropriate. I looped the ends around each bottle of water, taped them up tightly and threw those puppies over my shoulder. Here's some more pics. Worked out great. Tomorrow I might make a garbage bag backpack with a couple bags. In further testing, the peanut butter tastes better than I thought. Also the jelly beans are very effective, as suspected. Don't have anything handy to properly test this on, but stood up well to several firm thrusts into a crisp apple. I'm thinking it could be used for spear fishing. I used a pencil, though could use any decent stick or rod you can find.

Love this! It's a pain in the butt for me to physically roam around my local shops with the Tiny Dictators so I'll 'cheat' and use Coles online (same products and prices as the physical store though). The prices vary actually. However I believe that the prices usually actually more expensive online, so I'll let this slide. As I seem to be having to interpret the validity of others interpretations of the rules, I will further interpret that as this challenge was my idea, I will not be eligible to win, however I will contribute a prize to the winner. To be announced further.

Will a itemized list be good enough?? I have enough bits of junk floating around... This is where things get complicated, you're welcome to go down to your local shop and write down what you would buy and come up with a list and tally for discussion. Though pictures of a group of items really do tell a much better story. A list of items without a verifiable cost would be fine for discussion but if you want it to be able to enter the competition then you'd have to photo the price tag for each item, edit them all into one photo and a post that up with the list. I'd suggest even putting all the items in a shopping basket and taking a photo of them too because people will vote on what looks like the best kit. Some people struggle to imagine uses for items and how much you've got etc without pictures.
