One of my first introductions to prepping was via Youtube. For me - I like to watch a video or listen to a radio/Internet presentation and its great being able to contribute on forums. Its part of my learning curve, while hubby would rather read, read, read on a subject. In my being I just knew there was something wrong in the world, but I just couldn't put my finger on it. We have friends in the USA and they are very unhappy in where Obama is taking the country. In fact, they fear their government and no citizen living in a supposed democracy should fear their government. Finally, I came across this video and it stopped me in my tracks. It made sense and for the first time; I could see what I needed to do. I needed to prepare - not just for the zombie apocalypse but for loosing a job, sickness and we live in a country where bushfire, drought and flood is part of our very fabric of this great land.
Although at the time I didn't realise it, we had an ONSITE van down the NSW south coast and one minute we were enjoying the sun and the surf and next minute we had thick smoke drifting over us. A bushfire at Wandandian -10ks away - had cut the only road out to the highway and there was no way out with hundreds of fire fighters, helicopters and Police now saturating the area. For nearly a week, the highway was closed. If the fire turned to the sea, we would need to evacuate onto the beach. Our park was next to a lake which emptied into the sea next to us and the helicopters were scooping water out of there without rest.
The park is pet friendly and dozens of young families as well as senior owners call it their home away from home throughout the year. Standing on the hot sand in choking smoke with pets or young children was a big wake up call to me and getting into the surf was worse. The warm currents had not arrived and the water was freezing. How do you hold a baby, toddlers and pets up in the dumping surf? This time we never had to face the waves or the fire but there are pictures in the park office of burnt out vans and owners standing on their van roofs with hoses and ELVIS dropping water on the park owner's home.
Whatever the turning point, we both now realise it was right and perhaps one of the best decisions we have made. We keep it quiet; our adult children tease us, but all we say to them is keep it quiet and I give my gorgeous soon to be a first time Dad son, a firm look he probably remembers as a little boy. When our new little one arrives, hopefully his thinking will change. But today, I added a large jar of Nutella for him and a tin of rice cream for our daughter for 'their' preps.
This is probably THE 'preppers' required viewing video!! But it was the wake up call for me. I'm sure most of you have seen it, but in saying that, I gleaned much from a second viewing. It's called After Armageddon.
This next one is a documentary made when Britain lost power for several days. It is made up of actual recordings from cameras and iPhones collated to give you an overall glimpse of what happened, interspersed with different characters (actors) and their personal stories of their situations. People have to realise that when massive power failure happens in the USA and its not if but when, it WILL affectnus here in Australia because ATM, the US$ is the world's trading currency. But, just for the moment - but that's another story but look up BRICS in the meantime.
Some of you may have come across the kgoat channel. He speaks on many subjects on prepping and is very passionate. The man is a story teller! I enjoyed this series - scenario - a journal of what he thinks could 'go down' in his mind after an EMP burst. There is quite a bit of swearing, but his scenario is believable and he thinks of things I would never envisage. Great to listen to if you are driving, ironing, cooking, working in the shed or any time you get some time to yourself. It reminds me of sitting around the radio generations ago waiting for the next instalment!
