Yesterday I was over at my neighbour's place having a yap over coffee, we heard a jet and thought nothing of it for a second or two until it became obvious something was not normal.
We stand up and look in the direction of the noise to see a big-arsed jet cruising past, and I mean past not over. We where on a hill and I reckon the jet was at our level but over the adjacent valley so it had a little air under it but not much.
How big-arsed? Think C-5 Galaxy big, huge four-engine transport. All grey with no markings at all (IIRC).
Any ideas? I heard they have a new radar that will detect any plane in SEQ and we're thinking they were testing that for the G20.

They've been doing military training exercises in my neck of the woods lately (NQ). We had a big military cargo plane circling for quite a while a few weeks ago.

Was it a prop transport ie C130, or turbo fan like a C17/C5? There will be a lot happening in preparation for the G20 leading up to it.

"Most" RAAF Base runways wernt built for, or are capable of supporting the weight of gaint Aircraft such as the Starlifter, Galaxy, Russian Antonov etc , the runways would just crumble under their weight. I'm not sure of their weights fully loaded and fueled compared to unloaded and minimal fuel ....but in Oz aircraft of that size can usualy only land on civilian runways that the big passenger aircraft use. Graynomad,..just wondering was it heading in the direction of a Civilian Airport or RAAF?

That would be crazy to see, a plane that size at eye level. With all the stuff going on around the country and world, could be G20, military exercises or ......
now wheres my tin-foil hat...

Sounds like an RAAF C17. Big, slow, and low. They do touch and goes at Ballina airport quite a bit. Noisy as hell.
Mind you I thought I saw something like a learjet with a radome sort of disk above it today. Was at a distance through trees, so I couldn't be certain.
