Now crossbows are completely illegal here in WA, i understand that. However my son just got a crossbow toy for xmas that can shoot a bolt about 20-30m and if you hit someone under 10m will leave a solid mark (suction cap things). As most you would know, kids will bust anything given half a chance and i have no doubt that the suction cap will be removed or 'lost' over the coming days with the evil intention of inflicting more pain on daddy when we start our little 'war-games' with nerf guns and water balloons. In saying that if the 'bolt' snaps at the end and is jagged, it would easily break open skin up till 15-20m i would say.
I have looked over everything I can find and cannot find anything that seperates a good quality toy, from an "actual" crossbow. no mention of construction materials, poundage, anything. What I am wondering is if anyone out there with moe knowledge on the subject could point me in the right direction.

I would say when something is not marketed and sold as a toy, its a crossbow. Otherwise when the police seize it and the courts decide its classification.

how to modify toy xbow for prepping.
remove suction cup with pen knife/box cutter
find a small nail, use epoxy putty to harness the nail to the bolt.
Done. should be able to kill small game.

Otherwise when the police seize it and the courts decide its classification. pretty much my thoughts, I just thought it is another very grey area as I could buy a nice wooden one for the young fella, which in every aspect is a 'normal' crossbow except he only uses in the context of a toy, but i guess like a lot of things it depends on the mood of the copper at the time and why he is looking at it in the first place

Now crossbows are completely illegal here in WA, i understand that. There's no logical reason why. If I can pay a fee [tax] for a gun, I can do much more harm if it were protecting people, I can also drive a car down a busy street and do much more damage. It's absurd and has no evidence that it would stop anyone who's already insane or murderously criminal! I think it highly illustrates the problem with the law, remember laws are written by politicians.

If some bureacrat decides it's a weapon, they'll poop your party. I'm certain they earn a bonus for everyone they annoy.

Bow is legal crossbow is prohibited weapon That has always confused me I think a cross bow is a proscribed weapon which means you have to get permit to own. But once approve you can have many. you just need a good reason. Like a shoulder opp so that you can't use a long bow for hunting.

Other stuff is ok about permit etc. better get a cross bow and shoot and 'eat crow'

Just spoke to a guy from work last night. Apparently in Vic, to buy a crossbow, you just need to join an archery club with a crossbow section.

Step 1: Buy toy crossbow. Step 2: Measure and cut bow from metal part of a wood saw. Step 3: Replace plastic child's bow and attach metal bow to stock. Step 4: Be arrested.
OR
Step 1: Buy toy crossbow. Step 2: Paint black, grey or some other 'tactical' colour. Step 3: Be arrested. Step 4: Argue in court that it's only a paint job and the toy is harmless. Step 5: Be charged with having a replica weapon. Step 6: Argue that it's not a replica of any existing weapon and thus can't be tried as such. Step 7: Wait in jail while they try to remove loophole from law.
OR
Step 1: Invent new type of projectile launcher not covered by any existing law. Step 2: Be arrested. Step 3: Say 'fook it all!' and move to America.
