I just turned on the telly and saw about a half-hour of "Kevin McCloud's Escape To The Wild".
As the BBC Channel 4 website says, "Kevin McCloud travels to remote corners of the globe to meet people who have relocated to the most surprising and unlikely places in pursuit of a pared down existence". This episode centered on a family who left the UK to live on a Tongan island.
It was very interesting to see the benefits and challenges faced by these families, particularly when we consider that we may live like that one day. I hope to watch upcoming episodes.

I started investing in commercial property at 17, and industrial property at around 25. I partnered with family members, and we would owner-build on these properties. I sold out the commercial properties a couple of years ago, letting me pay out the industrial places to provide income and to buy a very nice home with a tiny mortgage. That's paid out now as well. I wouldn't recommend going into commercial & industrial property investments in the current economic climate, but it served me well at the time. It also served the ATO well, but don't get me started.
Now it would definitely be rural that I'd go for, but the idea of living on a tropical island devoid of dickheads (like on the show) becomes more tempting every day.

I watched the show, really liked it and plan to watch the rest of them. Personally the "desert island" thing is not for me, too exposed to the weather I think, I'm more your "warm climate mountain man"

Ha ha, yeah I used to be a "cold climate mountain man", but I'm too old for that shit now I must admit though I've been enjoying this winter as it's been pretty chilly (by CQ standards) and we've had the fire running non stop, I do likes me fire and we haven't used gas for cooking since about april.
