Spoke with a local farmer today, and he started to tell me about his home made desal plant. It runs on diesel, and can produce enough drinkable water to fill 2 x 20,000 litre water tanks in about two (2) days.
If I can the plans out of hi, will post it here.

the problem with reverse osmosis is the waste, not an issue with sea water as you just pump the salty crap back into the ocean, but if you are desalinating from a salty bore (like we have here) than you have nowhere to put the waste, which can be up to 70% of input volume

Nice one, thanks for the heads up. Curious, what would you do with the salty bore? I presume going the distilling method would be your preference?

Heres a video where a guy uses his pathfinder canteen as a saltwater desal .
I have not tried this yet with my Pathfinder canteen but thought the video is interesting .

Something worth noting is the use of salt as a fertiliser. It has been used historically and in large quantities. Here's a link to some interesting info. horticulture.ahdb.org.uk/sites/default/files/research_papers/FV%2051%20Final%20Report.pdf One of the things to note is that salt can have an adverse effect on soil structure, to counter this it was applied with LARGE quantities of stable manure. Some crops had as much as 1500kg salt per hectare applied. I first started investigating this when an area that I was dumping large amounts of marine fish tank waste (I used to run a retail aquarium) grew magnificent weeds LOL. Edited for ease of reading.
