Hey,
Looking for a new past time, and something that will give me a useful skill. Anyone give me some advise other than buying a simple set of picks and a couple bump keys and practising on my house doors and padlocks?
The above is what I intend on doing, as the cert3 in locksmithing is a 3 year fulltime deal that requires fulltime employment with a licensed locksmith to get onto the course... what a bloody joke

You can get pick sets and pick guns out of Queensland last time I enquired (eBay maybe?) Do a search and you'll find "practise locks, some are cutaways so you can "see as you feel" There's a lot on you tube as well. Bump keys, don't know if they're available here, but you can get a set online from the USA and they seem like an excellent alternative. I reckon they could be fairly easily made from blanks. I have a mate who was a Master Locksmith and he taught me a few simple things. Good luck.
just sayin'.

I believe you're not allowed to take them off your domestic property unless you're a locksmith.

G'day , Lock pics are classed as "house breaking implements" in the eyes of the police/courts in Australia , just possession will land someone in hot water even on private property if you happened to be searched , Lock pics are also a prohibited import with au customs regulations.
Also Most sellers that sell lock entry tools will only sell to genuine professionals

Everything is a prohibited import. Customs is the 'personification' of what is wrong with this country.

Anyone with the ability to read and basic engineering with be able to churn out lock pick tools. It's pretty basic stuff. The powers that be can ban every damn thing, won't stop one break in. THEY ARE CRIMINALS, LOL.

The laws do suck regarding pick tools but I guess if they were easy to obtain it would create more problems ,
Rake pick tools (hacksaw/hook type) are useless for most door locks and are more suited to older wafer locks , locksmiths prefer the pick pistol .......

From that site
Looks like they don't care who they sell to, it's up to the buyer to determine that they are a "qualified purchaser".

Well one reason I want to know about this stuff is for my new gig as a firefighter, so looks like I'm okay. Yeah that was one of the approved vocations eh? I believe so... If we rock up and can see smoke coming from your place but nobody answers the door we need to see what is going on inside as there could be a fire that will destroy the house or worse there could be somebody unconscious inside. If we can do that without destroying the security of your house then great, if we gain forcible entry to a property and can't secure it when we leave then I think that police have to remain on site until the owner/occupant returns home. If we can use a bump key or picks then we don't have to smash, pry or cause damage to make our way inside.

Lock pics are and will never be a good idea for firefighting and any critical situations, speaking with experience some locks can take 5 seconds to 10 mins to pick and some can't be picked ,
.
In those situations forced entry is always made by gov services as it's fast when seconds count .
Put it like this ,
"If someone died as a result of a 000 call because you were trying to pick the lock when forced entry should of been made you would be liable"
I did my 3 years in tafe and 12 years locksmithing and still do work for friends and family .
Lock picking is a Art and not everyone can successfully do it
Hope this helps

If you're not in under 5 seconds the door is coming down
