this looks very good for the price. I think the security applications are fantastic, combine this with a wireless network at your BOL and you can remotely monitor entrances to your BOL as you can then cover the screen the Therm-App is connected to while viewing it on a seperate one.
Check out the Samsung SideSync software for screen sharing between a PC and android device........... hmmm, may have to butter up mrs reth for a bday pressie this year

There's a great and extensive and long thread [lots of pics and vids] that kept me up late, demonstrating it's capabilities and it's flaws HERE. For myself it's in a price range that gets me interested, it's capabilities are excellent, far far better than the entry level Flir [$3500] in every way. There's some aftermarket software in development that pushes it further and a user group with more conversations [yet to be read] HEREScope mountingCheaper scope mountingA flip up lens cap that apparently fits.
And the recommendation from the forums is to have a dedicated phone to use it and being Android you can pick up a suitable phone for $150 or so. I'm very impressed with it, would be nice to able to get 25hz instead of 9hz, even though it works very well in a static sense and driving is ok as seen on the video above. This throws my whole budgeting for things into a quandary. It uses only 0.5W in itself and combined with extended battery and rugged case as per something like this.. had a reported battery life of 12hrs with the wifi being on [and draining it quicker] for half that time. Even during the day, the difference thermal makes to spotting critters is huge.

Ha, I too remember rotary dial. Android is 'one' operating system [lots of brands], which is popular on Samsung S3, S5 etc phones, on par with the iOS [operating system] which is only on iphones. This means that iphones wouldn't work for it I'm afraid.
Even though I use Android, I'd be having a separate phone anyhow so it's a system ready to go.

Haven't looked at it all yet but that does seem to get around the cost issue we mentioned elsewhere, well to a large extent anyway.
Now I don't want a smart phone for various reasons, but am I correct in saying that the way to go would be to buy a cheap one just for this application and not put a SIM card into it. Therefore no tracking or other smart phone BS but a reasonable FLIR for around $1500 all up.
I still think that a head-mounted NVG would be best for generally pooncing around in the bush at night, add these for the obvious benefits as well, and that leaves the rifle scope which probably has to be NV due to cost.

Yeah, no smart card, no network needed, you can use wifi to update the software on the unit if you like. I've been seeing suitable phones on ebay for $90.
I would agree there's a cost comparison, but not a quality comparison. If it's the FLIR E4 that is handheld and goes for $1500US, then it's got an IR resolution of just 80×60! [4800] Versus 384 x 288 [110592], quite a difference.
There's another issue in that importation of items with more than $1000Au will bring GST. In addition to that, having someone fill out the forms for you as many do [it's probably not that hard, so could be free] costs you $250+ which is a royal scam.
In terms of night vision, and moving around and doing things, sure a head mounted NVG would be the go, this is more about spotting to which thermal is far superior [there's just no comparison] and therefore best for surveillance.

Is it possible to use a smartphone without a SIM card? I've never been able to set one up without the card...

Someone asked me if I had a smart phone - I relied I sure did - it rings, I press the green button, then I get to talk to someone. Sounds pretty smart to me!

Is it possible to use a smartphone without a SIM card? I've never been able to set one up without the card... Asked the wife who used to work for a certain company in communications and she doesn't think you need a sim card for set up and to quote her, 'you probably would for apple' lol. It certainly doesn't need one for my old Samsung Galaxy S2 as it turns on, is usable, can connect with wifi and so on, it just doesn't have a phone connection all without a sim or memory card.

I have an iPad that can take a SIM card, I don't have one for it so it just doesn't work as a phone, all the other stuff (like apps and GPS) work just fine. So I assume it's the same with other devices.
