I came across this really useful HAM radio chart at Offgrid Survival that I thought would be useful!

Question, why do you need a license to use a ham radio, and if the shtf, will it really matter if you have a lic?

theres international protocols associated with radio communication -the protocols are international and when you've got a ham radio you can easily talk to people all over the world and basically most of the course is there to teach you to not be a dick on the airwaves and not to screw up anyone elses communications. Also you need a license to BUY a ham radio - its sort of a drivers license for worldwide communication. There are certain bands that are restricted to emergency services that you're not allowed to broadcast on (for obvious reasons) and most radios simply aren't capable of doing so - theyre designed by default to not be able to transmit on those bands but you need to know what youre doing in any case because you can stil buy the equipment that allows you to transmit on (for example) police bands... Ham radio is also reasonably complex for the uninitiated - if you sat down in front of one right now without any prior experience you'd have a fairly hard time figuring out what you're doing and would probably spend a lot of time listening to dead air and trying to talk to people on frequencies that arent commonly used.

Have just brought a Codan 9323 Hf radio. Can use it to access Ham Frequencies and handy for 4wding. I have just got my Foundation licence, which allows me to access certain frequencies
