What do you guys have in your BOB in terms of food? Duration food should last, type of food and quantity?
I'm remaking my BOB and I'm thinking of sticking to a mixture of oats and rice as a base and adding some foil packs of tuna, vacuum sealed bags of mixed nuts and seeds, small salt and pepper shakers, multivitamins and then some peanut m&ms and instant coffee.
I'll have to do the math of energy intake but probably try get 5 days food that doesn't need cooking (oats with some cold water and a few sunflower seeds, twice a day), the m&ms and mixed nuts. Then try hang onto the tuna and rice until I can find time to cook the rice.
Might throw in the 90sec microwave rice packs, they could be eaten cold I guess?

Interesting that you mention m&m's because if you look at the chemicals used in them for the colouring and then match them up with what are considered to be dangerous if consumed you may just find that you, and whoever, are consuming items that are banned in many parts of the world as far as food additives go.
Australia appears to be a country where products that have been banned in other parts of the word are still able to be used in the manufacture of processed foods.
Remember that you will probably need a different diet for the different seasons as in the hotter months more liquids are going to be required than in the colder winter months.
I very much doubt that you will be able to carry all of your water needs for five days in a period of forty plus degree days particularly if you are on the move or expending energy in other ways.
Personally I would also stay away from salt and coffee as these two items we do not need and if you listen to the literature put out by the health authorities most Australians have far too much salt in their diets which as we get older causes health issues. In a world after the SHTF, and I gather that is what you are preparing for, the healthier diet the better as I doubt that there will be a health system to look after you.
I gather that I am probably a bit older than you and I have never taken vitamin supplements in any form during my lifetime as it is my belief that a good, all round diet is what we need to stay fit, active and healthy.

The problem being I won't be carrying a balanced all round diet and conditions may mean I don't have one for an extended time...
Also despite your holier than thou reply, you didn't answer my question

My BOB (or as I mostly see it, my GHB) has a couple of tuna cans, some Mainstay bars, a couple of fruit & nut bars with honey, a few bottles of water (plus a Lifestraw, some fire-starting methods for boiling, etc). I have a few multivitamins plus I recently added some Hydralite (electrolyte) sachets. There are also a few hard lollies if I feel like a sugar fix. If I happened to have a couple of pieces of fresh fruit & veg nearby when setting out I'd grab them on the way out the door (if I had time).
On the topic of unhealthy ingredients used in BOB foods, I don't care if my kit designed for 72 hours has some content that may prove unhealthy if consumed in excess or for long duration; we're talking about survival scenarios in which a little comfort may go a long way for our psychological wellbeing.
Otherwise I should probably get the cigar out of the kit, too...

Much of my BOB food is Aussielent. It's a 'complete' food source and a whole day weighs half a kilo. No need to cook it, just add water. I carry about a weeks worth, spread out over 2 weeks equates to loosing 1.8kg of body-fat if not particularly active. I do carry some rice, soup and flavoring also. I lived on it whilst loosing weight, so not an issue for me to do from my own experience. I store our BOBs in the boots of our cars and they doubles as get home bags. I also store a little extra water and food in both that isn't meant to be carried but rather having the car in a bug out Aussielent only has a years expiration date unfortunately, and I typically do a round of charging batteries, changing fuel and swapping BOB food every 6 months anyhow. From there it goes back into my normal food stock and I go through one or two packs a week anyhow as easy meals. So, to answer your questions more directly; Duration; 10 full days for me, 6 full days for wife. Obviously I would share and we would ration if warranted. Storage life less than 1 year. Type; Aussielent, rice, soups, Vegemite, dried biscuits, stock cubes. From my own experience I've found that if you include short term foods you've really got to follow up on swapping them out regularly. In the back of a car the chocolate and nuts went bad very quickly and I had some time when I thought I had food there but didn't. ============== My main issue and a little off the topic is the next level, what to do 'after' we bug out. A weeks worth of food would, perhaps extended with rationing, might get me out of dodge or back home though then what? If things are bad enough to have to leave everything behind but what I can carry, things are 'really' bad.

Where do you buy the Aussielent food? I've never heard of it before.

Linky was in the post though to make it easier, aussiesoylent.com.au/product/chocolate-7-day-pack-new/The chocolate mixed with twice the water recommend is my preferred tasting mix. That is 3/4 of a cup per 600ml shaker = 1100kj [8 meals in a pack] and is a filling meal.

About the only thing permanently in my BOB are Mainstay food bars, but other food gets chopped and changed depending on the season and how I feel. A variety of freeze dried meals get rotated through (these required a couple of hundred ml of water though) as well as canned stew type meals (but they are heavy). Rolled oats, musli/brekky bars, "Happy camper" meals also get thrown in occasionally. The happy camper meals are good as they are long life, taste good, don't need water and don't need to be heated. Downside is if they split open in your bag it will get messy.
I also carry a Sawyer water filter, great little things.
I haven't worried about multi-vitamins as our bags aren't set up for anything long term, but I can see the benefit in them.
Have heard of the Soylent products before, but didn't know you could get them here yet. Thanks for the heads up Shinster, I might look into getting some to try

We have Mainstay in our BOB's, plus pkts of soup and some pasta single serves. We carry 4x600ml water and a life straw each and I have the water filter as well. We keep high protein muesli type bars as well.
M&M's are a good idea as the chocolate won't melt every where. Sugar is good to have as it helps re-set your body after an Adrenaline rush! Salt is good for re-hydration. So we use the powdered Gatorade or similar and add it to the water, also if the water you use to refill has a bad taste this helps.
If you are under stress when using your BOB like in a true SHTF then I would suggest some multivitamins like children's gummy bears and vit C tabs in your kit (keep them cool though)
