Just wondering if any one else has a problem with loyalty cards.... went into Dan Murphy's today to purchase some vodka ( for medicinal purposes after TSHTF I swear lol ) and I was asked YET again to sign up to their loyalty program. I refused and the girl behind the counter rolled her eyes and proceeded to tell me how I was being silly as I would have saved $5 with the purchase I was making. Does anyone else have a problem with the government/ corporations knowing how much you purchase?

Yes and no. I want to look 'normal' I pay for my supermarket food with card and I do the 'abnormal' things without much in the way of following me, much like when I just picked up all the rolled oats at a supermarket, I paid in cash particularly. I don't subscribe to those 'loyalty cards' simply because I can't be bothered with their supposed upsides at the cost of convenience and additional effort. I'm not 'happy' about it either, I find it invasive and at odds with freedom.

Phew I was beginning to wonder if I was abnormal as the check out chick was quite emphatic about me signing up to the rewards program and was very surprised that I didn't want the card....

I refuse to sign up to any loyalty programs. Simply data mining and tracking operations.
Normally when you shop with a credit or eftpos card they know where you shopped, when you shopped and how much you spent. You actual sales data goes into a pool and they can do bulk analysis on it.
When you sign up to loyalty programs what you buy, when you buy it and how much you buy are all tagged to a profile of you. This data is then sold on, analised and stored.
I dont care how abnormal it makes me look, just say no. Do you have a such and such card? No. Would you like to sign up? No. Its free! No. But benefits, discounts, free pupplies. No.

I won't have anything to do with them.
I use a CC for most things and in that regard look pretty normal I think.

I have a friend who doesnt drink at all but wanted to follow a specific food recipe which needed a liquor of some sort. She went to a bottle o and bought it with cash and later received an email trying to sell her liquor from another organization. She had used her flybuys card for points, and somehow they had shared the email they have on file from such with these other orgs, that quick!
There are 3 groups after something from you in general. 1. The Government for mass surveillance 2. Google, Faceplant and the likes for selling you stuff 3. Hackers for robbing you of something.

The other thing to keep in mind is this data is on file. If any law enforcment or government ask for that data I dont see flybuys standing up for your right to privacy, not their fight and they dont believe in it anyway.

Mrs Pete and I used to use a FlyBuys card at Coles & their related stores. Until one day we received an email, giving prices on everything we regularly bought, even down to the correct nappy brand & size for our kids. We've never used it - or anything else - that relates us to a particular purchase (with the obvious exception of things like cars and firearms that require registration).

If something is free, you are the product.

The only cards I have are for bcf, supercheap and anaconda. Simply for the discounts you get. I ET cranky when the misso flashes the flybys at Coles, and she's been using for several year and only around d $60 worth of "credit" on it and she yet to see how stupid they are, I think I married a sheep lol which would explain why it's so hard to get her to subscribe to the prep program/lifestyle.

I have taken to rolling my eyes a bit when asked and getting out my stash of 20-30 (mostly only used once) loyalty cards for different shops - including defunct chains, interstate train cards etc - then going "nup don't have yours." If they ask if i want one I generally go "seriously, I have too many as it is, no more!!" ... never had anyone try and argue beyond "are you sure".

I use them all the time for the fuel discounts and the so called "member's only specials". I don't receive junk mail from them as I always select the "opt out of advertising" option, which is sometimes hidden in the fine print. Honestly, I've received more annoying sales phone calls resulting from my home loan than any loyalty card. The latter, incidentally, has resulted in zero calls.
My take is unless I'm buying something i don't want people to know about, I don't believe my purchases are so important that the guv'mint or any other sinister faction will give two hoots about them.
Sure, it's not something for 'free'. It's a way to try encourage you to shop at their store, obviously. And I have no problem with that symbiotic relationship, because my purchases are so mundane it doesn't breach OPSEC in the slightest.
Not panning anyone who chooses not to use them. Their choice, obviously. Sure OPSEC might be slightly higher, but it's a trade off I'm willing to make.

Mrs uses flybys, I use my credit card that accumulates points all the time. I also have a coles group family member discount card which is surely tracking purchases.
With my online shopping history, 2 slabs of bottled water is hardly gonna put me on a list I'm not already on.
