I'm completely out of date when it come to tech items.
Mrs Pete's laptop has croaked it, so she needs a replacement. Preferably a tablet. And she doesn't like apple stuff. What tablet would you recommend?

I should provide some details... it'll be mostly for bookfacing, web browsing, and storing the copious amounts of photos that the kids take every day.

Sorry Pete. Can only recommend the IPad. Have one of the original ones in a shock proof case and it’s still going strong.

The universal answer it depends. On non apple tablets you can only really go Android or Windows. Samsung have a good reputation but are more expensive, but you can buy the shock proof cases for them which are rare for Androids. I still have a Kogans branded tablet with a basic case which is still going strong. Main thing is to get as much memory as you can.

My theory now is to get cheaper tablets but a good external hard drive. We have a couple of Asus tablets that were only a few hundred $$ that I’ve had for a few years. They do annoy me for lack of grunt so if purchasing again I would pay more for that, but the good thing is that pretty much all files, pics, etc are on a networked hard drive that I can access from any computer in the house. I can change computers with no hassle, and I can back that hard drive up and know that it is all done. Also when there are murmurs of a possible cme as there was a few months ago I can put one netbook along with the hard drive into a faraday cage for a few days - even longer without much inconvenience - and use the other netbook, just saving onto it or a memory stick for that time and transfer any work later.
The smaller netbooks (that come apart to use as tablets too) have very little storage, so you really need the external hard drive anyway.
Disadvantage - they have little memory too, so ask them to do too much at once and they complain. Also they are pretty hopeless at art and music applications. Need a bigger computer for that. They are great for convenience though - just open and start using the net, check email, etc.
I’m not sure I would recommend asus. They are good but I’m sure others are too and they aren’t great, but I’m not sure others are great either! My main recommendation is to not worry as much about what netbook but make sure you set up an external hard drive and a way to back that up. Then the netbook isn’t as important.

My family all use android Samsung tablets they are good value for money - not good for photos and storage - photos should go to online storage like dropbox or something -and an external hard-drive from another device used for backup.

...photos should go to online storage like dropbox or something... Nope, nope, nopedy-nope, and nope again. I do not trust online/cloud storage for images that potentially contain pictures of both my children and location. I've disabled cloud storage (as far as I'm able) on all devices, as I simply don't know who's looking through them.

I have two external hard drives that I use to back up each other, and a couple of others that I just use to back up parts (eg iTunes/music etc on one so I can take it places without taking the big hard drive). I then manually back up some stuff to an online service.

I use iPad's but I would NEVER replace a laptop with ANY tablet.

Morgo I agree - I'd never replace a laptop with a tablet... but this is Mrs Pete we're talking about, who bookfaces way too much and uses minimal email and useful stuff...

In that case I'd probably look at a Samsung tablet.
