Has anyone challenged themselves to live of their stored food for a period of time - like a “no grocery shopping challenge”?
I am considering doing something like it, partly as a time and money saver but with some exceptions. I’d put in a bulk order of dry goods that I would expect to last six months or so first so I wouldn’t be using up my stores (although of course I’d use oldest purchased first and replace them) then I’d plan to do my next order six months later although I could do it sooner if needed. I would still go to a fruit and veg shop. Also apart from homemade milks we also use a lot of long life milk and I couldn’t store enough of that (or afford it in one go!) so whenever it was on sale I’d get (perhaps order) a few cases to last until the next sale.
I am thinking that it would be a great way to assess how much we actually use and what I forget that we use, and also considering how many extras we regularly get when at the supermarket, it should save money.
Any thoughts? Anyone done anything similar?

I currently do a bulk order of dry goods basically when I think we need it - usually about 3-4 times a year. I’m just considering being a lot more restrictive about just purchasing extras.

Well in younger, dumber days I remember living of cans of tuna and baked beans with nightly dinners of ramen noodles haha. Thankfully I learned to cook and found more of a new respect for the food I eat. I also do a one a fortnightly shop and gladly feed myself off that.

We’ve been shopping out of our stores for many months, only supplementing fresh fruit/veg and some produce for the most part. I’ve knocked off about 30kg of rice, 30kg of pasta, and 50+ cans of soups, chicken and tuna. We effectively halved our grocery bill for about 6 months and we’ve taken our supplies down to about 4-6 months.
I usually stock about 60-80 liters of UHT milk and another 30+ of dry powdered milk.
Realised the other day that we were down to only 8-10 litres of UHT milk + the powdered. Time to take a proper inventory and restock a bit.

Have you been doing this to save money or to clear out some space? What has been your motivation? I went a little overboard in my preps and had stockpiled 12-18 months of food. Once I got over my fears that a SHTF scenario was imminent, I decided that 3-6 months would be a much more manageable (and sane) level of preparedness. We began by not backfilling things that were in regular rotation, working down the short-term and canned items and UHT milk. My wife also went on a big baking kick, so she hit the flour, meals, sugars and honey really hard for a few months. Shopping from the basement has enabled us to save extra and increase my holdings in gold.
