Just letting everybody know that the opt out period for the electronic "my health" records starts tomorrow and you only have 3mths to select to opt out before you can't do it. This would be good for those who don't want different government agencies snooping at your records, especially now that mental health records are going to be under a lot more scrutiny around firearm licensing.. www.myhealthrecord.gov.au/for-you-your-family/howtos/opt-out

We opted out today. But we also read that you should phone to make sure it went through as if for some reason it didn't you are screwed and on the system for ever. If I can find a link about this I'll post it.
EDIT: Can't find the link, but it seems that this could be the number to phone, 1800 723 471. I'll do so in a day or so.

Doctor: So how are we today? Gun owner: Pretty good, been a bit down lately though. Record: Patient suffers from depression. Good luck getting your license renewed next time it's due. Also, it seems that you should explicitly tell the doctor that you don't want anything entered in this system as some clinic's computer systems will default to do so automatically unless they uncheck the option.

Thanks all for the heads up - hearing Cyber Crime experts warning people off this as well - not as safe they say as the experts claim.

Yeah - I just tried to Opt Out, came up with an error message - have to ring in the morning! Pete, O ye of little faith, the Govt says it will be ok - what could possibly go wrong? ?

Moth mrs and I got a confirmation email within seconds that our opt out had been successfully processed. That was probably an auto response, I would still verify it by talking to a human. Even then you can't be 100% sure but that's about all you can do.

"If you miss the deadline of 15 October 2018 and a record is created, you will be able to cancel it."
just saw this on the website, however I still think that even opting out will just mean we dont have access to the information, not that they wont compile it, regardless of what they say

I rang up today to chase up why my online attempts have all been rejected only to be told that there is already active profiles for each member of my family and I have to call back in a few days to have them cancelled !!

Yep, I printed confirmation and stored it digitally. Not that I believe it will make much difference, but as frostbite mentioned it at least gives me an inadmissable defence.

Opt in or out doesn’t really matter technically,
All medical visits including prescriptions are stored permanently with Medicare as per legislation , with brief descriptions of what the visits entailed , some medical professionals choose to write quite large descriptions ...
Pharmacists have access to prescription history (this itself can be revealing ) again its Medicare legislation.
Also medical professionals by law have a obligation to report to Authorities anything relating to mental health where it’s deemed serious, some doctors have a different interpretation of what’s serious,
So basically the my health thing is horse crap , and what they hold can’t be opted out from ....
I know these details as I’ve personally accessed my full medical records via court order from Medicare and those of a family member approx 3 years ago .
