Survivalism is the practice of preparing for the imminent apocalyptic destruction of society. Survivalists are also known as ‘preppers’ because of this focus on preparation for catastrophe. Survivalists prepare for a future where governmental and civic infrastructure fails. In most imaginings, this failure might be caused by ecological disasters, economic collapse, civil war (especially along racial lines), nuclear attack, and foreign invasion. The focus in survivalism is most often on practical steps required for surviving disaster without a functioning human society. censamm.org/resources/profiles/survivalists-and-preppersFor those interested in another point of view.

I'd recommend a copy of Putting Food By: Fifth Edition May 25, 2010 by Ruth Hertzberg and Janet Greene
My parents grew up in the Great Depression. As far back as I can remember, the pantry was ALWAYS full of canned goods and non-perishable foods. It was just the way I was brought up. My wife and I did the same. Today, our pantry is always kept full.

Today, our pantry is always kept full. Yep, same here (although it was WWII that my folks had to survive). I'm told that fleeing from the Russians on foot across Europe to finally be captured as a teenager gives you a certain perspective... and I'm told by my mother that having one's house bombed by the Germans gives another perspective as well. The revealing fact about this article is found on the "About" page: "The Centre for the Critical Study of Apocalyptic and Millenarian Movements (CenSAMM) was established to promote high quality critical and academic research into apocalyptic and millenarian movements across time, place and culture. The Centre is supported by the Panacea Charitable Trust, which is the non-religious successor organization to the Panacea Society, established when the Panacea Society ceased to exist as a religious community."I suspect this blog is written by a bunch of pseudo-intellectuals who want to sound like their opinions matter but haven't consolidated their thoughts properly.
