Most of my metal files are inherited. They are fairly worn. I bought a Nicholson brand file a few years ago and it is excellent. Works much better than even the rougher pattern old ones. I think I need some new ones.
One feature I found helpful is the ability to remove the handle and use the file flat on a surface by resting my hand on it and rubbing it back and forth. Makes it easy to smooth an area in the middle of a large flat sheet of metal.
Also large handles help, much easier to grip if you have big hands.
And a quick way to de-burr a drilled hole is to use the end of the file. Hold it at 45 degrees, put the corner of the file in the hole then spin it around back and forth to grind away any small ridges of metal. Works really well on small holes.
Anyone got any advice on brands, types, methods? I am very much a 'grab a file and see what happens' type, not a 'look up how to use it' type so any feedback appreciated.

Last time I was in the machine shop ole Fred told the apprentice to go get him a flat bastard. Seem the apprentice didn't hear him correctly and came to me instead Seriously tho, I have attached copy of some pages from my old Fitting & Machining Handbook from my apprenticeship days back in the 70's. Dont expect too much changed regards files in all these years Oh Oh seems I cant attach anything because of some forum storage limitation
