Yes but our power grids have evolved since the 40’s too. Yes, they've become more susceptible to this kind of event. Transmission lines 100s of km long were a rarity back then. The national grid did not exist in the way it does today. The surge arresters at the end of lines will not protect against solar flares. The control buildings at substations are not shielded and neither are most of the control/signal cables in the trenches. Modern transformers are much more susceptible. The big substation transformers from the 1920s did not have tap-changers and had no real control equipment. They are not immune, but certainly far more durable than what we have now. To make things worse, with only a couple of exceptions, most of the manufacturing capability of transmission electrical plant has left our shores. Good luck getting this stuff from China at the same time as they are trying to rebuild their own grid.

I have been collecting and restoring equipment from as far back as ww2. such as generators with mechanical air gap regulators, no electronics to screw up with an emp/cme, and communications equipment and test equipment that uses valves, once again, emp/cme proof. Its only a matter of time folks until one hots us. Ignorance is temporary, stupidity is permanent. Yeah, the Russkies did try at one stage to build a fighter jet with a redundant valve control system so that it wouldn't fall out of the sky during an EMP event.

Some Russki gear is very well made, especially the Selena range of radios.

Yes but our power grids have evolved since the 40’s too. --- --- I have mentioned many times I am illiterate as to the tab A into slot B of how electricity works...
However... I once had a brother in law that was in charge of sub station, transmission, distribution for a good sized power company.. Once power left the generator building, it was his responsibility.. He was responsible for an area about 350 km x 600 km... With less than 900,000 people...
So he would say the electrical system in many areas dates back to the 1920s-1930s REA, Rural Electric Association days when the systems were first installed... Much of the system being little different now than when installed, but of course with newer equipment as it needed replaced... Cheapest system, by the lowest bidder...
So with much of the rest of North America much the same, it would be easy to cause damage, outages, you name the problem over and above normal breakdowns from age, use beyond its limits, and the like...
I have to presume the same for water, natural gas and other like systems..
My 5 cents worth of knowledge and trivia...

equipment as it needed replaced... Cheapest system, by the lowest bidder... An astronaut was asked what he thinks about whilst awaiting the countdown to throw him into space, and his answer was "I think about all the millions of bits n pieces, upon which my life depends, all supplied by the lowest bidder" All the more reason to get your own power, water, waste water sand communications sytems running. YOU are the one in charge and have no one else but you to blame if it all goes legs up.
It has many other uses as well....allow me...Worf
