We have learned by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion. Keeping source to myself. I am familiar with the source

Seriously look at Northern Ireland. Catholic or Protestant? Branch Dividians, Jonestown to name a few. As a member of the services I served in the Middle East and had family in gaol in the Maize in Belfast. I have seen the worst of every religion in both areas and it is always someone twisting a text to suit their needs. In reality it is not the every day person involved but the disenfranchised, disposed and greedy who think they will gain something from the cause that join up. Look at Germany in the 1930's. Would the Nazi's have been so successful as a political institution had there not been hyperinflation and a highly disposed populace. No belief is bad until it is forced on others. Christians have done this previously at the point of a sword or buring at the stake, Jews have been persecuted and so have several Asian minorities, currently we have ISIS. The point remains 99% of the population have no stake in the action being done in their name. I am also a devotee of the Norse pantheon and know from history they did similar things, it is what we do and what we stand for regardless of which deities we worship is the point. Sorry end of rant returning you to your regular program yes and all those incidents you mention have received condemnation from many and all sides of things. So that argument falls back to moral equivalence, non of those things are the subject of this topic. Currently the topic is isis and their supporters either morally, financially or physically.
No one rioted when the dividians got taken out, no embassy's were burnt to the ground after Jonestown. Try drawing a picture of mo and riots will be instant world wide, people will be murdered, buildings will be burnt down, and a fatwa will be put on your head.
Many books have been written and the crusades still get brought up every time a muslim even sneezes, that boat has sailed many centuries ago. Also, can you quote any scripture that was used to validate going on the crusades, because I cannot find one.
The Jewish people have been hated even before Christianity or islam came on the scene. It is still wrong, no matter who does it, so again, not relevant to this topic.
I am a descendant of Olaf the Black, a Norse king, and guess what, it makes absolutely no difference. violence directed against anyone for no reason is not acceptable, regardless of who does it, regardless of your motivation, regardless of your edicts, regardless of your religious texts. _______ Now sadly, there are those within both sunni and Shiite islam that use certain texts to warrant their violence against anyone who does not subscribe to their sect of islam. This is what we are discussing here, Not the 1.something billion who are just trying to get through life. Sadly there is somewhere between 10-35% of muslims (which makes somewhere in the ball park of 150 MILLION personages) who do subscribe to the ideology of isis, alquada, Taliban, hezbolla, hamas, al shabab, and so on, and on and on. these are the ones we need to focus on, but how to you pick the nice ones from the isis type?, that is the question Men are qualified for civil liberty in exact proportion to their disposition to put moral ..... state of nature, but which blossom and flourish in the rankness of political society. ..... All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. Edmund Burke

I was watching the news a muslim woman saying she didn't like hearing the Sydney terrorist being associated with muslims. If it is just a one off insane person, wouldn't the incidence of murderous insane person born amongst the population in the world be spread evenly amongst all religions? Why is it just one religion is a magnet for all the 'one off' insane people? I don't ever recall hearing of someone ever saying "Jesus is great!' and blowing themselves up. Seriously look at Northern Ireland. Catholic or Protestant? Branch Dividians, Jonestown to name a few. As a member of the services I served in the Middle East and had family in gaol in the Maize in Belfast. Yes it seems that the guy has had a history going back years and even his lawyer said he was "damaged goods" with an unshakable ideology.
So he was not a member of any organisation and had been a well known agitator. We should have been watching him.
I will not buy into the religious debate other than to say that it is fundamentalist views of any persuasion be they any religion are wrong. It is the twisting of a religious text to suit your ideals be it in Sydney, Oklahoma or Jerusalem.

They are bloody hard to shoot around. Takes a hell of a lot of practice before you get any accuracy.
I was impressed the Feds at parliament house had suppressed M4's. Probably so not to wake the residents.
Interesting choice of target. Takes away the food and water negotiating chip.

To rebuild civilization is a big ask. And to what level? So i think that we should look at what our preps give us....... Additional time! If our world has been knocked back to the stone age by such a cataclysm them we have a little additional time due to our preps in order to size up the situation and the new surroundings and look at the best way to start.
Civilization means an advancing community. So the things we should look at bringing to a community are:
Skills base - We need to present ourselves as a useful member of society. Realistically we are too insular within the prepper community. We have spent considerable time and funds on ensuring that we have supplies and equipment for immediate short to possibly mid term survival. However we have to look past this and at joining a community of survivors at some stage. As a race we need social interaction and more so do those of us with children as they need the interaction of other children to mature. So we need to develop skills that are useful to ourselves and others. We need to broaden our personal set of skills to have something to offer because after our preps decline we need to offer something to a community. I am aware several of our members are stocking up on precious metals but it may be a while before regular trade occurs with any one and you may get more for a useful pot than a metal bar.
Knowledge base - I am aware the current thinking is to have all of your written material stored digitally. This is in my opinion a major flaw. Batteries die and screens crack and components fail but a book if stored with a little care can last for years. We should look at having information on all aspects of our survival - spinning and weaving may be highly important after you have worn through your clothes, herbal remedies, maths and engineering. I know this is a different view but once again it is not just our survival but a rebuilding of society so we must consider education for our children and others.(How many of us have stockpiles of paper and pens?) The growth of community is not just population driven but the expansion of the minds in the community.
Lore base - Yes LORE not LAW but they can blur between the lines. A civilization needs a set of values and rules to live by. All communities have similar rules. Don't flog your mates gear. Don't flog your mates wife. Don't kill your mate. etc. Basic tenements to a society. However these can be dressed in may ways and forms, be they religious or autocratic these are the same. A community must be created with these but also an identity a background and a direction. This may come from how the community was formed and by whom to the over coming of a common adversity or adversary. This is recorded along with decisions of the leaders of the community to provide a history for it's people. This may sound a little far fetched but remember that this is the ways communities operated until very recently.
If one thing i want you to consider is that we should start considering looking past the initial SHTF scenario and look at long term survival and consider what else we should be stockpiling.

Yeah but that is the same of anything. A dairy cow is useless if you don't understand dairy husbandry, handling, or feeding. (Dairy cows eat a LOT and it has to be in particular ratios if you want healthy cows). Plus you have to know about resting them, handling them safely and without stress on them (stressed cows =no milk). Same could be said of any other thing. A fak is only as useful as its user. A gun is only as reliable as its maintenance. And a horse is only as useful as its handler/rider. Even dogs. A dog is only as safe and useful as you train it to be. That was my whole point Wolfstar. If you don't have the commitment and the desire to engage with the animal then there is no point having it. Your dairy cow will still have some use if you are un or semi skilled with cattle but the horse will be very little use. Don't get me wrong I like horses and that is why I do not want them to suffer in the hands of the un initiated or lazy.

Ok in the past 10 days we have had: 2 Calves 13 Chicks 9 Piglets 5 Puppies So we will have to do some culling soon. A couple older sows and a cow possibly. Culling? sounds tasty Well the mincer/sausage maker and smoker will get a work out. I will also be making a ham, sides of bacon and attempting some salamis. On the horse thing. If you have had nothing to do with horses they are next to useless. My sister has two but as she does not know what to do with them they are very expensive lawn mowers. They have only been risen four times in the six years she has had the and three of them was me. Now they are in no condition to ride

I agree Pheniox, the collapse will leave us slightly ahead of the the dark ages.
So our reliance on electronic devices will ultimately not help us and our lack of skills will affect us as well. Not our hunting and gathering skills but the actual day to day skills of existence. Sewing of clothing without electrical devices, manufacturing of tools and implements. How many of us know a bowyer of flectcher? Can any of us do this ourselves? What about simply making a chair from scratch without power tools.
I think we need to broaden our knowledge base personal and as a group so we can share our information before comms drop out. I know NSW TAFE used to run an introduction to blacksmithing and I am sure there are other courses around.
Should we be stacking our Bug Out Locations with tools and books with the intent of being there for the long haul.
Net time you are considering what to buy as your next prep item consider some hand tools and stocks of nails and screws or items that may help you for an extended period at your locations be they be bug in or out.
Just my thoughts feel free to comment or disagree.

The 9mm still wins. I think that to have a situation where there is a trade in metal the society/economy has to be more than subsistence. I would assume that I want to feed my family and protect them .

I have the original 40k Rogue Trader. Much darker game..... Penal units as part of the Imperial Guard with explosive collars, a legion of the damned for failed marines ans suicide bombers. They changed it quickly. I had Ultra Marines and Eldar Harlequins seriously scary on the field.
