Access to the world. Be it Internet news and forums or the fact that travel is relatively cheap we now have access that was not available even 20 years ago. In the 60's and 70's if you knew someone who had been on a plane more especially overseas they had a certain status. Now days flights are just busses with wings.
Back to the thread. Losing the ability to access information, cultures and friends.

We have 12 chooks at the moment half of which are broody at the moment and sitting on eggs. These were either raised from scratch (incubated eggs) or purchased as young birds. I agree about having more than 2 but depending on your yard size no more than four. My chickens range over more than an acre so they do not do much damage at all but in confined spaces they can be destructive. I saw a story once on Gardening Australia where they had chooks in small mobile coops in gardens as weed control but if left to their own devices they will eat all your seedlings.
Ducks are messy but do like to eat our lawn. But if you want an interesting choice Guinea Fowl are a great idea as they are also very territorial and will gang up on snakes if they come near them.

Being old school I have a Gerber Mk1 & Mk2. I have 2 CRKT M16-12's all of which are becoming hard to come by now days however there are a few Boker Applegate Fairbairns' s available.. As a heavy duty blade I used an an98 Butcher Blade bayonet it's 100 years old and still tone of the finest blades I own.
I agree with Aus and you should work within a budget but new is not necessarily best either.

Ok so now we have a situation where there will be a certain level of concern from some members of the population (a minor part) and ignorance is bliss from another. The problem is that the aim of terrorism is to disrupt the normality of life by using fear and uncertainty to enforce their position. In this they have been progressively achieving success for over 13 years in the form of security checks at airports etc.
So how does this fit in with our choices?
We choose to be prepared. This does not mean we are cowering in a corner in fear. However we should not bug out or in just yet.
Consider the following:
1. Large scale events are the targets that get most mileage. Try to avoid them. Footy finals, major events such as the G20 and other places that attract major crowds. Eg finish line of the Boston Marathon.
2. Do not seek to alienate or marginalise minorities. Not all terrorists are Muslim and not all Muslims are terrorists. The Oklahoma bomber was a disaffected young white man with a grudge. Fundamentalism is the problem be it Christian, Muslim or white supremacist. Fundamentalism is fundamentally wrong.
3. Community is strength. Be it the support you get from this group or getting to know your neighbours and local groups the more a community grows the less chance that there will be alienated people in it.
4. Because we are what we are we should remain as they said a a long time ago. "Be alert but not alarmed." Or as it was mutated to " Be alert Australia needs more lerts".
I wish for all of you to stay safe but do not give the terrorists what they want.
