Well, the primary family chariot has been for the last couple of years a 2000 Kia Sportage LWB wagon, pretty much stock apart from a roof basket. Did well for the 5 of us in regard to running the Triangle of Death (School, Work, Home. ) Unfortunately, this year she dropped first one, then a second cylinder, at the same time as rust appeared in a few places around the turret, so she's now a garden ornament. Plus, just got the news that sprog #4 is on the way - a 10 year break after the third......so a 7 seater is now a necessity rather than a nice-to-have. Have spotted a Ford Maverick 4.2 Diesel 7 seater wagon in a local car yard, so she's a mid 90's or thereabouts. Can't see any marks from roof bars/racks, and she is clean apart from a Hayman-Reece style towbar. According to the salesman she is owned by the Boss's dad, has only done around 260 000 k, mostly towing a medium caravan on bitumen. Seems legit. No dents around the underneath that I can see, and no rust apart from on a few stonechips. Looks almost too tidy, with few leaks in the hubs/engine bay usual suspect areas, just a few damp marks rather than actual leaks. Asking price is 6K with a couple months NSW rego. Bit dear for that model and age, but at initial look appears very straight, and ideal to use as a base to build up into a decent basic tourer. Mighty tempted to be getting her as the main chariot at least till the bub gets here around Feb; and then relegating her to the weekend weapon (and BOV) status and buying either a late 90's Pajero 7 seater, or some <shudder> economical people mover as the shopping trolley. Thoughts?

Sorry I can't help with people movers, not my bag. 230k would be OK with a 1HZ Toyota engine, probably also with the Maverick donk.

I think there on the money price wise as its a diesel. You have also mentioned how clean it is.
The same models in the Patrols are still fetching good money.
Pictures?
My thoughts is its about right, its now up to you and your negotiating skills.

I don't ever buy from a dealer. They need to make a profit on what they're selling , a private sale is just selling it for what is worth. You may get a short warranty from a dealer but any of my friends who have had problems under dealer warranty have really had to battle hard for the dealer to honour their warranty.

Ok, so ive had a bit of a look on eBay. The decent ones are in the vicinity of $4K to $7K (Patrols the same shape/era are still fetching up to $15K)
I think $6K (based on your first post) is getting up there. I would ensure the rego is sufficient for that price.
The leaks are concerning, especially the hubs. Ive rebuilt a few hubs. Not much fun.
All used vehicles need things done here and there, You want to make sure that anything that does need done is minor and you can do yourself. Last thing you want to do is have to put new tyres on it because you didnt check them. (check the tyres lol)
Has it got any extras on it that may benefit you? CB Radio? Roof Racks? etc.
Point out all the bad things about it (if any) then compare then with the good bits. It will make you your decision much easier.
Good luck!

lol, yeah. Bit of a surprise snipe at 44...... Going back to have another look at the Mav this week, will be getting under it for a good hard look. There is a mechanic I trust not to far away from the yard, I will get him to have a good look if I am keen on the vehicle. Found another car, a Suzuki XL7 7 seater for a little less, but a lot newer. Nowhere near is much room, and a petrol to boot.....still have a few months before I need to panic, so I am not in a hurry. Thanks for the advice.

Good advice getting your mechanic to check it out - good luck with the purchase.

Good luck with the purchase. If they are anything like the Patrols of that era it will probably run forever, there still seems to be plenty of them around. Good luck with #4 aswell!

What is even the difference between a Maverick and a Patrol apart from the badge on the front?

What is even the difference between a Maverick and a Patrol apart from the badge on the front? Nothing- maybe one or two trim differences, and if I remember right, the Mav only had the 4.2 Diesel and 4.2 Petrol Carby engines. Even the part numbering system is Nissan- I worked for a Ford dealership through the 90's in the parts department and I had to learn the Nissan numbering system which is different to what Ford used on most other models. Lasers and Telstars used the Mazda system- had to learn that as well....sheesh..... 14 years since I sold my last oil filter, and I still have part numbers clogging up space in my noggin that I could use for more important stuff. Unfortunately, the maverick/Patrol I was looking at was sold straight away, and my budget has now shrunk due to some other constraints. Now looking for something like an early Pajero or Jackaroo 7 seater to around 2.5 K.

Caravans can be very restrictive, but if you don't want to go too far off the beaten track maybe.

Well, the BOV funding situation went haywire;the bank said no to a bit of a loan, and I didn't want to hike up the credit card debt. Then, a few extra bills, and a medical emergency- my partner miscarried a few weeks ago-which is why I went a bit quiet for a while as we dealt with it.
Anyway, roughly back on track now.
Had a loan for a while of a 93 Hilux Surf wagon. 2.4 Turbo diesel. It's now come up for sale. Pros:10 months NSW reg. Dual batteries, the second is a new, quality, unit. Cargo barrier. Homemade drawers in back built to take some plastic tubs. Older GME TX4400, with a stuffed mic. Snorkel. Turbo timer. Alloy front bar. Alloy side steps, HD King springs and shocks in rear to replace the adjustable ones that it came with. Good service history, last owner bought her about 10 years ago from the importer, blew motor straight away, and had later, better head put on. 265/70/15's, highway tyres with 60% tread at least, including spare. Only rust I can find is one patch in one rear door.
Cons, 420 000 k's.......and speedo doesn't work. Auto. A few oil leaks under her- nothing dripping though.
Been driving her for a few days a couple of 250 K trips, seems to be behaving so far. They are asking $2500, which is my budget with a bit extra put aside for some repairs if necessary.
I'm taking her to a mechanic tomorrow and spending the $$ to have a complete inspection and test drive done, to give me a thorough worklist of what needs/might need/one day should be, done. If there aren't any really serious things wrong with her, I'm mighty tempted.....

The Surf's were a decent truck and looked the part, the only concern i ever knew of was the early imported models. More so to do with the turbo Diesels and type of driving they were subjected to in Japan being slow, low revving, heavy traffic work. When bought into AU, they were revved and drove quite a bit harder resulting in blown turbos and also engines. Given the year and mileage, i dont think this would come into play. Having the vehicle inspected is a great (and sensible) choice. Keep us updated mate.

Check 4wd works
Its a hilux surf, its no hilux...
2500 on a bov... Land rover?? But they aren't crash hot unless your willing to go hoon on it (that means mods, lots of mods)
Rust, trip to pannel beater, to see how deep it goes
Speedo, ebay
Keep auto (not worth converting)
The "high kms" as long as serviced, get belts checked
But what you can do, warm her up, pop open the oil cap, check for smoke/steam with a tourch, you see it don't buy it...
The dream car for a bov would be a old land cruiser saraha, (60-80 series) but your looking at way outside your budget, but its worth throwing money into it over time (rust prevention kit!!) In special "upgrades" solid steal chassis, steal body, a luxury 4wd... OK I will stop now

Yeah, the ideal for me would be a 4.2 Diesel Ford Maverick- rebadged GQ Patrol, but a little cheaper usually, but mechanically identical. A big, solid, basic truck. Non turbo to keep it simple. But, this came up, in the budget, so we will see.

Well.....got the inspection done. Apart from some worn bushes and some luxury stuff not working that I can either ignore, or fix at my leisure..... P/steer pump leaking a lot, front wheel bearings a bit loose- I'd be replacing them anyway. 1 stuffed tie rod end, and off course the wheel align afterwards. Drivers seatbelt frayed. ...and no smoke coming out of the crankcase, but there is some evidence of blow-by. Mech thinks a heavier weight oil will be helpful in a motor this age. Speedo not working seems a common thing with these, will have to pay to get that investigated further... On balance, if I can argue the owner down a touch, I think I'll buy her and fix the bits over the rest of the year, then trade up to a nice Maverick/GQ if I can find one in the next 18 months. <edit> trade up before the motor gets worse, lol
