Okay guys, this is a competition. Though I'll leave it up to group consensus if we arrange a vote and prize. A bit of friendly competition and discussion over peoples entries into the competition is more what I'm after. At it's heart, it's a standard resource-allocation game. The situation is... You're at your local supermarket and the power goes out, there has been a [misc news story] that has had you worried over the past couple days. You check your phone and you've got no reception. The store manages to get some lights on from their back up generator but the phone lines their Eftpos run off are down. They're taking sales but it's cash only. The ATM isn't working either, and you've only got $20 in your pocket. The challenge is simple, buy the best Survival Kit you can with $20. Now for some of us, myself included, my local Coles is 800m away. I could easily walk out, jog/drive home and have all my other preps at my fingertips. However let's, for the purpose of the challenge, have the situation dictate that you might reasonably assume that your house is damaged, destroyed or you will be unable to return to your home. The rules are as follows: -You only have $20 cash, you can pay by other means for the purpose of the competiton however $20.00 cash means the total purchase price cannot exceed $20.02 as anymore would round up. -You must shop at a physical location, no online purchases. You can only get items from one shop, you're meant to be in rush. -You should shop at the supermarket you physically shop at most often. I have no way of policing this however but don't travel 50km just to look cool on the internet, it's not worth it haha. -To be eligible to win you must take a photo of both the itemised receipt and your collection of items. (EDIT: a photo of every items price tag, editted into the one photo will suffice. Just do the maths right.) -You will be judged by the unruly mob of the forum on your choices, and either deemed worthy of praise.. or otherwise. I'm considering organising a prize of some sort, if I do organise a prize then I'll link to another thread with a vote. The winner of the vote will be the winner of the prize. Before we get some entries, how would you feel each entrant either donating an item to a bundle that the winner receives or something like that? Might be difficult to organise though. If this gets too hard, I've got something in mind. For the purpose of fair competition, EDC items are not to be included in the kit. I carry a Leatherman Wave 95% of the time, but that's 'cheating'

Love this! It's a pain in the butt for me to physically roam around my local shops with the Tiny Dictators so I'll 'cheat' and use Coles online (same products and prices as the physical store though).

Just in case anyone is seriously wary about OpSec, your receipt contains the location of the store you shopped at. Rem, it took me less than a minute to pin yours down. I know most won't care and it's fairly general anyway, but thought it worth mentioning.

Wow we have entries already! Great job remnant, is the deodorant and 900 matches your son bought for a flamethrower arrangement?
The cash limit is $20.02 though, however given the scenario I think it wouldn't be too difficult to assume that the checkout person would let you scoot 5cents short. Though not much more I'd think. I'll let the first entry slide, leave the second one up please because it's still good but when we vote it won't be eligible.

Will a itemized list be good enough?? I have enough bits of junk floating around... This is where things get complicated, you're welcome to go down to your local shop and write down what you would buy and come up with a list and tally for discussion. Though pictures of a group of items really do tell a much better story. A list of items without a verifiable cost would be fine for discussion but if you want it to be able to enter the competition then you'd have to photo the price tag for each item, edit them all into one photo and a post that up with the list. I'd suggest even putting all the items in a shopping basket and taking a photo of them too because people will vote on what looks like the best kit. Some people struggle to imagine uses for items and how much you've got etc without pictures.

Was just having fun with sons entry! Haha no he said he didn't want to smell bad, I don't think he thought about it too much, but he has picked some useful items. Not sure what he thought the corkscrew, bottle opener thing was! I think he may have thought it was a can opener! HAHA

The prices vary actually. However I believe that the prices usually actually more expensive online, so I'll let this slide. As I seem to be having to interpret the validity of others interpretations of the rules, I will further interpret that as this challenge was my idea, I will not be eligible to win, however I will contribute a prize to the winner. To be announced further.

Here is mine - it's interesting to see some of our similar stuff remnantprep, I wish I could change mine now that I've seen yours though The sewing kit was a great idea. The toddler nappy pants are actually for the 5month old - the toddler is toilet trained and these were the cheapest nappies. I'd be aiming to do elimination communication during the day, and nappies at night. The chickpeas were the best 'bang for your buck' out of the cheap beans - they had the most energy and protein. I have so many noodles because I'd be feeding the toddler and myself - and because I'm breastfeeding I need the extra calories so my supply doesn't suffer. This was so hard considering I have to cater for a baby and toddler :/ it was hard for me to spend so much of my precious $ on nappies, but a baby that's peed all over everyone in the middle of the night would suck for everyone involved, not to mention I wouldn't have any facilities for laundering or finding new clothes.
