As the title says, if there was a total collapse tomorrow would you rather have 500 rounds of 115gr 9mm JHP or 20 ounces of silver?

The 9mm for sure. I can barter, defend myself and my family, and at a pinch hunt with it.

For the record these are pretty close in price, just ordered $405/500 Federal 115gr JHP 9mm. 20oz of silver is around $400 spot, $450ish minted.
Now the follow up question I was planning. Would you prefer 1000 rounds of 9mm or 500 9mm and 20 ounces of silver?

500 9mm and 20 ounces of silver, 500 rounds is plenty for most requirements and 20oz of silve could come in handy

The 9mm still wins. I think that to have a situation where there is a trade in metal the society/economy has to be more than subsistence. I would assume that I want to feed my family and protect them .

There gets to a point of diminishing returns though, just trying to work out at what stage I get silver. I made an account on a silver website, put a 10oz bar and 2 1 oz bars in the shopping cart then couldn't click confirm purchase... just don't think I'm sure enough that it's a good move yet.

I'd grab a couple of 1oz bars and see how that works for you.

yeah i was thinking of getting a 1oz bar per month but the postage is what puts me off, it adds quite a bit to the per oz cost if i do it individually

I just sent NH a pm actually, the 1oz bar premiums just slaughter the spot price to the point you'd need a real disaster to cash out without a loss if you needed to liquidate. The 10oz seem better value, but with shipping it's still around 25% above spot.
Just not sure...

Replied to the PM The most I've paid from a buyer here in Aus is $30 for a 1oz bar via ebay. My most recent purchase was from an ebay seller in the US. I bought six 1oz bars, with auctions closing between US$18.53 and US$21.00. I had them all shipped to a freight forwarder we use through my work, and got them sent over with some other bits and pieces I had ordered. I reckon all up they would have cost around AU$25/oz.

I'm thinking I might find a physical store in melbourne, shipping seems to be the killer on the price of buying small so I'll have to try figure something out.

I may be interested in this store if you locate one.

Bit late to the party, but I would go the 500 9mm rounds. I don't have a 9mm, but could either barter them for a cal I do have or acquire a 9mm somehow.... For the follow one question I would go the ammo and the silver, to avoid having all my eggs in one basket.
The other thing to look at may be the volatility of the markets regarding $AU and metals prices

For those that don't have 9mm, feel free to replace 9mm for a calibre you have in a quantity which is about $4-500.
For those that don't have a gun, get a gun!
For those with histories of violent crime, domestic abuse or mental illness... the above doesn't apply to you. Hopefully your licensing branch of the state police will prevent you from legally doing so anyway.

Few hundred rounds of 243 and a mould to make silver bullets in case zombies morph into vampires. I have seen movies where that stuff can happen.

I'd take the 9mm every time. Heck I'd take 50rds of 9mm over $1k of silver.
If the SHTF the 9mm is useful (well to me), the silver is just a lump of metal and pretty much totally useless but might be useful in the future when/if things settle down as a new form of currency and that is provided you survive long enough.
Ask yourself this, during the SHTF would you trade $400 worth of your supplies to someone for $400 worth of silver?

Depends what sort of collapse it is. That $400 of silver may skyrocket in value if the dollar crumbles.
